The Blue Bard is a young singer in service with House Tyrell. His real name is Wat.[1]

Appearance

Wat is a handsome young man[2] with healthy teeth.[1] He has blue eyes and dyes his curly, shoulder-length brown hair blue in the Tyroshi fashion.[1]

The Blue Bard dresses all in blue,[3] including a blue silk tunic slashed with blue satin, blue wool breeches, and blue calfskin boots.[1] He plays a lute.[1]

History

Wat was the son of a cooper and was raised in the trade, but he found he had more talent for making lutes than barrels. When he was twelve years old, he ran away to join a musician troupe. He wandered half the Reach before coming to King's Landing in search of patronage.[1]

Recent Events

A Feast for Crows

As part of the Tyrell entourage, the Blue Bard sings at the wedding of King Tommen I Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell.[3] Taena of Myr informs Queen Regent Cersei Lannister that the Blue Bird has become Margaery's favorite entertainer.[2] The Blue Bird plays for Margaery and her entourage when they go to pick flowers in the kingswood.[2] Taena learns that the Blue Bird performs at an inn when he is not attending to Margaery.[4]

Cersei connives to use the Blue Bard as a pawn in her efforts to remove Margaery from King's Landing, and she has the musician perform while Cersei has dinner with Taena and Lord Orton Merryweather. During the meal, the queen has the Blue Bard arrested and sent to the dungeons for seducing Margaery, though he claims never to have done so. In front of Cersei, the Blue Bird is stripped and mutilated by Qyburn, who removes one each of his eyes and nipples, and is told to tell the story as Cersei wants him to. Under torture he names Ser Osney Kettleblack, Ser Tallad the Tall, Ser Lambert Turnberry, Jalabhar Xho, Hugh Clifton, Ser Mark Mullendore, Ser Bayard Norcross, and Hamish the Harper as Margaery's lovers.[1] ' The Blue Bard also names Ser Loras Tyrell and the Redwyne twins, Ser Horas and Ser Hobber, but Cersei has him recant the three; Loras because the accusation is not credible and the twins because she needs the support of House Redwyne and their ships to deal with the ironborn.[1]

After Margaery is successfully framed, Cersei has the Blue Bard arrested again. He is tortured once again by the Faith but continues to tell the story Cersei wants him to.[5]

A Dance with Dragons

The Blue Bard is still held by the Faith. According to Ser Kevan Lannister, the singer appears to have gone mad.[6]

Quotes by the Blue Bard

Cersei: It is easy to see why you are Lady Margaery's favorite.

Blue Bard: Her Grace is kind. She says I give her pleasure.

Cersei: Oh, I'm certain of it.[1]

Cersei Lannister and the Blue Bard

Quotes about the Blue Bard

The singer's boots were supple blue calfskin, his breeches fine blue wool. The tunic he wore was pale blue silk slashed with shiny blue satin. He had even gone so far as to dye his hair blue, in the Tyroshi fashion. Long and curly, it fell to his shoulders and smelled as if it had been washed in rosewater. From blue roses, no doubt. At least his teeth are white. They were good teeth, not the least bit crooked.[1]

—thoughts of Cersei Lannister

The Blue Bard's eyes were the same color as Robert's. For that alone, she hated him.[1]

Behind the Scenes

In the US edition of A Feast for Crows, it is said the Blue Bard was the son of a chandler, a mistake fixed in the UK edition.[1]
