Beron Stark was the Lord of Winterfell and the head of House Stark during the reign of King Aerys I Targaryen.[1][4] Beron was a younger grandson of Cregan Stark.
History
[edit]Beron became Lord of Winterfell after his older brother, Rodwell, died without issue.[3]
Lord Beron gathered swords to throw Lord Dagon Greyjoy's ironmen back into the sea and made common cause with the Lord of Casterly Rock for it.[5][4] According to a semi-canon source, he was mortally wounded in the ensuing clash, however, and House Stark faced a crisis of succession involving several Stark widows and possibly their children.[6][7] Despite the crisis, Beron's eldest son, Donnor, succeeded him as Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North.[3]
Beron is buried in the crypts of Winterfell.[1]

[edit]While hiding in the crypts of Winterfell after the sack of Winterfell, Bran Stark sees the tomb of Beron Stark, along with the tombs of his ancestors and descendants.[1]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]While visiting the crypts with Lady Barbrey Dustin, Theon Greyjoy recalls the names of some statues, such as Beron's.[5]
Family
[edit]Beron was the middle child of Lord Brandon Stark and Lady Alys Karstark. Beron had an older brother, Rodwell, and a younger sister, Arsa Stark, as well as an older bastard half-brother, Lonnel Snow. Lord Beron was married to Lady Lorra Royce, with whom he had seven children; Donnor, Willam, Artos, Berena, Alysanne, Errold and Rodrik Stark.[3]

Behind the scenes
[edit]George R. R. Martin's comments about the future Winterfell-based Dunk & Egg novella do not explicitly identify Beron Stark as the Lord Stark who was mortally wounded in battle with the ironborn. However, as The Mystery Knight subsequently revealed that Beron Stark was gathering forces to face Dagon Greyjoy's raiders in 212 AC, it can be deduced that Beron Stark is almost certainly the identity of that Lord Stark.[4][N 1] Additionally, The World of Ice & Fire confirms that Starks died during reaving led by Dagon Greyjoy.[9]

[edit]- ↑ Since Beron's second son,[3] Lord Willam Stark, died[8] in 226 AC,[9] well after Egg was recalled to King's Landing when King Maekar I Targaryen took the throne in 221 AC,[10] the only other possible identity of the Lord Stark in the Dunk & Egg story is Beron's immediate successor, his eldest son Lord Donnor Stark. However, with the Dunk & Egg story revolving around a succession crisis, it would not make sense for it to be Donnor.
