Willam Stark was the Lord of Winterfell and the head of House Stark during the reign of King Maekar I Targaryen.
History
Willam became Lord of Winterfell after the death of his older brother, Donnor Stark.[1]
Willam first married Lyanne Glover and had one child with her, Brandon,[1][3] but Lyanne died while giving birth to the boy. Nan came to Winterfell to be Brandon's wet nurse, but he died at age three of a summer chill.[4] Willam then took Melantha Blackwood as his second wife, and together they had two children, Edwyle and Jocelyn Stark.[1][3]
When Raymun Redbeard, the King-Beyond-the-Wall, went over the Wall, Lord Willam called his banners and marched with Lord Harmond Umber, with the northmen meeting the wildlings on the shores of Long Lake[5] in 226 AC.[6] Willam was killed by Raymun[7] and beheaded in the battle at Long Lake, but his younger brother, Artos, avenged him by slaying Raymun. When the Night's Watch arrived too late, a furious Artos assigned them the task of burying the wildling dead as he grieved above the head of of his brother.[5]
Willam was succeeded as Lord of Winterfell by his son, Edwyle.[1] Willam is buried in the crypts of Winterfell.[8]

A Clash of Kings
Jon Snow tells Lord Commander Jeor Mormont that the wildlings invaded in the time of his grandfather's grandfather,[9] Lord Willam Stark.[1]
While hiding in the crypts of Winterfell after the sack of Winterfell, Bran Stark sees the tomb of Willam Stark, along with the tombs of Willam's ancestors and descendants.[8]
A Dance with Dragons
Discussing the risk of wildlings scaling and passing the Wall, Jon Snow recalls how Raymun Redbeard once climbed the wall, resulting in the bloody clash with the forces of the northern lords and Willam Stark's death.[5]

Family
Willam was the second son of Lord Beron Stark and Lady Lorra Royce. He had one older brother, Lord Donnor, and five younger siblings, Artos, Berena, Alysanne, Errold and Rodrik Stark. Willam had three children—Brandon, Edwyle and Jocelyn Stark— with his two wives Lyanne Glover and Melantha Blackwood.[1][3]
