The Hunter's Gate is one of the gates of Winterfell. It is located near the castle's kennels and kitchens. Since it leads to the wolfswood,[1] the Hunter's Gate is often used by hunters looking to avoid the winter town.[2]

A Clash of Kings
Theon Greyjoy leads the capture of Winterfell by a small group of ironborn.[3] Drennan and Squint stand guard at the Hunter's Gate when Bran Stark and his companions escape the castle. Osha kills Drennan in the gatehouse, and the direwolves Summer and Shaggydog kill Squint on the wallwalk; the latter's body is then found in the moat.[2] Theon assembles a search party by the Hunter's Gate for an unsuccessful search in the wolfswood.[2]
Bran and his companions hide in the crypt of Winterfell and thus survive the sack of Winterfell. Bran, Hodor, and Meera and Jojen Reed later depart Winterfell through the Hunter's Gate. Its iron portcullis has been warped by heat so it cannot be raised more than a foot, so the travelers have to squeeze beneath its spikes.[4]
A Dance with Dragons
After observing that Stannis Baratheon has slowed during his march on Winterfell, two scouts of Lord Roose Bolton return to the castle through the Hunter's Gate.[5] Heavy snowfall accumulates at the Hunter's Gate, and scouts sent through the gate do not return.[1] Theon Greyjoy hears drumming from the wolfswood beyond the Hunter's Gate.[1]
Quotes
The Hunter's Gate was conveniently sited close to the kennels and kitchens. It opened directly on fields and forests, allowing riders to come and go without first passing through the winter town, and so was favored by hunting parties.[2]
