Hosteen Frey is a knight of House Frey, the sixth son of Lord Walder Frey, the first one born of his third wife, Amarei Crakehall. He is married to Bellena Hawick.[3]
Appearance and Character
Hosteen is a husky, powerful man with a square face and strong jaw.[4][5] He is brawny, on account of his Crakehall ancestry, with a jut of jaw and arms thick with muscle.[6] He speaks bluntly[4] and has a booming voice.[7]
Hosteen is a seasoned soldier and the fiercest fighter of Walder's brood.[6] He favors his mother's family and is considered the strongest of all the Freys.[4][8] The knight carries a longsword.[7]
Stannis Baratheon judges Hosteen to be dim and stupid,[9] and Theon Greyjoy compares him to a bull.[6]
History
Ser Hosteen participated in the tourney at Lannisport held to celebrate King Robert I Baratheon's victory over Greyjoy's Rebellion. He was defeated by the eventual champion, Ser Jorah Mormont.[10]
Hosteen rode in the tourney on Prince Joffrey's name day in 298 AC, but he was unhorsed by Ser Loras Tyrell.[11]

A Game of Thrones
Hosteen attends the Hand's tourney in King's Landing with six of his kin—Ser Jared, Ser Danwell, Ser Emmon, Ser Theo, Ser Perwyn, and Martyn Rivers.[12]
Hosteen is at the Twins when Catelyn Stark informs her son, Robb, of the alliance negotiated with Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing.[11]
A Clash of Kings
Hosteen is a captive of Lord Tywin Lannister, together with his brothers Ser Jared and Ser Danwell Frey and his half-brother Ronel Rivers.[3] Tywin holds captives from the battle on the Green Fork at the Tower of Dread in Harrenhal.[13] Arya Stark observes the four Freys exercising in the Flowstone Yard of Harrenhal and then being ransomed by their kin.[13]
Hosteen is a member of the Frey contingent commanded by Ser Aenys Frey. When Lord Roose Bolton holds a war council after the Battle of the Blackwater, Hosteen insists that the war is lost and that Robb, who is now King in the North, must yield.[4]
A Storm of Swords
Ser Hosteen is among the Freys who meet Ser Jaime Lannister when the maimed Kingslayer arrives at Harrenhal with the Brave Companions.[14]
Hosteen is introduced to Catelyn Stark at the Twins on the eve of Lord Edmure Tully's wedding to Roslin Frey.[5] Lothar Frey says something amusing to Hosteen during the wedding feast. Hosteen and Aenys pound their cups on the table to bring attention to Lord Walder when their father wants the bedding custom to begin.[15] During the ensuing massacre which becomes known as the Red Wedding, Hosteen cuts down Lucas Blackwood.[15]
A Feast for Crows
Aenys and Hosteen command the two thousand Frey swords who are sent with Lord Bolton to retake the north.[16]
A Dance with Dragons
Hosteen and Aenys accompany Roose past Moat Cailin[6] to Barrowton.[17] They become distressed when three of their kin—Ser Jared Frey, Rhaegar, and Symond—disappear after returning the bones of Ser Wendel Manderly to Lord Wyman Manderly at White Harbor.[17][18]
Hosteen and Aenys are present at the wedding of Ramsay Bolton to "Arya Stark", who is actually Jeyne Poole, at Winterfell. Lord Manderly personally serves slices of pork pie to Aenys and Hosteen during the celebration.[19] In the worsening cold, Hosteen loses an ear to frostbite.[18]
When several men-at-arms are murdered, Hosteen at first suspects Theon Greyjoy but later suspects Wyman of ordering the deaths.[18] When Little Walder Frey is found dead at the First Keep, Hosteen brings his body into the Great Hall of Winterfell. Hosteen accuses Lord Manderly, who denies the charge while insulting House Frey. This enrages Hosteen, who cuts Wyman's neck and would have killed him if not for the intervention of Wyman's men. When one lunges at Hosteen with a dagger, the Frey dodges and cuts off his attacker's arm. After several men are killed and wounded, Dreadfort spearmen prevent the situation from escalating further. Roose Bolton sends Hosteen and Aenys in the vanguard to attack Stannis Baratheon's army.[7]
The Winds of Winter

The Frey vanguard falls into a pit trap set by Mors Umber. Hosteen loses a horse and Aenys is killed, placing Hosteen, whom Stannis refers to as "Ser Stupid", in command of the Frey force sent to battle Stannis.[9]
