Mariya Darry is a noblewoman of House Darry, the wife of Merrett Frey, the ninth son of Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing. They have four children who lived past infancy, Amerei, Walda, Marissa, and Little Walder Frey.[3]
Appearance and Character
[edit]Mariya is a handsome woman with grey streaks in her hair.[1] Her husband, Merrett Frey, considers her to be a shrew.[4]
History
[edit]Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing, arranged a marriage between his ninth son, Merrett, and Mariya, one of the daughters of Lord Darry. The marriage was an excellent match for Merrett, for the Darrys were a wealthy and prominent House that stood high in the favor of King Aerys II Targaryen. However, almost immediately after the marriage, Robert's Rebellion broke out in 282 AC, leading to the fall of House Targaryen; the Darrys suffered grievously for their staunch support of the Mad King, costing them half their lands and most of their wealth.[4]
Since the start of their marriage, Mariya quickly found Merrett to be a great disappointment. To Merrett's displeasure, the marriage initially only produced daughters, as well as a stillbirth and a girl that died in infancy, before finally producing a son, Little Walder Frey.[4]
Recent Events
[edit]A Clash of Kings
[edit]After the Battle of the Blackwater, Ser Lancel Lannister is named Lord of Darry,[5] for the Darrys are extinct in the legitimate male line after the deaths of Ser Raymun[6] and Lyman.[7]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Mariya is widowed after her husband, Merrett Frey, is hanged by the brotherhood without banners for his involvement in the Red Wedding.[4]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Ser Kevan Lannister arranges for his son, Lord Lancel, to wed Mariya's daughter, Amerei Frey, to strengthen his claim on the Darry lands through Amerei's half-Darry blood.[8]
After the marriage, Mariya resides at Castle Darry with her daughter. She is present when Ser Jaime Lannister visits the castle, providing Jaime with information on the death of her husband and the activities of the brotherhood without banners and other outlaws roaming the riverlands. Mariya does not believe the outlaws can be rid of until the smallfolk accept Lancel as lord, as they loved her father and grandfather.[1]
Mariya's younger sister, Jeyne, is furious that her sons with Ser Cleos Frey were not granted the Darry lordship.[9]
