Saffron is a spice found in the known world.

Culture

Saffron is highly valued.[1][2] The Saffron Straits, found between Ulthos and the Shadow Lands of Essos, are so named because of traders carrying the spice across the water.[3]

History

Saffron was among the spices taxed by Lord Rego Draz, master of coin for King Jaehaerys I Targaryen.[4]

Ser Corlys Velaryon purchased saffron in Qarth during his ninth voyage with Sea Snake.[5]

The father of the founder of House Spicer was a trader of saffron and pepper.[6]

Maggy the Frog kept precious saffron at her tent at Lannisport.[1]

The Treasure brought back saffron from the Jade Sea.[7]

Recent Events

A Clash of Kings

Trader captains give chests of saffron from Yi Ti to Daenerys Targaryen in Qarth.[8] Daenerys later sees chests of saffron, frankincense, and pepper being off-loaded from Vermillion Kiss at the port of Qarth.[9]

A Storm of Swords

Jars of saffron are among the trade goods in the holds of three ships sent by Illyrio Mopatis to Daenerys.[10][11]

A Feast for Crows

Umma occasionally cooks with saffron at the House of Black and White in Braavos.[12]

Chests of saffron are among the plunder presented by Euron Greyjoy at the kingsmoot on Old Wyk.[13]

A Dance with Dragons

After the Sloe-Eyed Maid wrecks at Sweetsister, a pound of Qartheen saffron is found in its hold. The saffron is then used to spice sister's stew at Breakwater Castle.[2]

Daenerys smells saffron during a feast with the Yunkai'i at the Great Pyramid in Meereen.[14]
