Warden of the West is a warden title traditionally held by House Lannister, the Lords of Casterly Rock and rulers of the westerlands, on behalf of the Iron Throne.[1] The warden has been responsible for the defense of the western lands of the Seven Kingdoms since Aegon's Conquest.[2]

Responsibilities

The Warden of the West is tasked with defending the western regions of the Seven Kingdoms from invaders.[3] Although now part of the realm, men from the Iron Islands historically raided the shores of the Sunset Sea,[4] and some ironborn desire a return to the Old Way.[5]

History

Loren the Last bends the knee to House Targaryen, as depicted in Game of Thrones: Histories & Lore.

Loren I Lannister, King of the Rock, was captured the day after the Field of Fire during Aegon's Conquest. Loren the Last submitted to King Aegon I Targaryen, and was named the first Warden of the West.[2]

Lord Tywin Lannister, Warden of the West, and Lord Eddard Stark, Warden of the North, supported King Robert I Baratheon during Greyjoy's Rebellion.[6]

Daven participates in the siege of Riverrun.[10]

Quotes

Kingslayer. An able and courageous man, no doubt, but his father is Warden of the West, Robert. In time Ser Jaime will succeed to that honor. No one man should hold both East and West.[1]

Lord Tywin the proud and splendid, Warden of the West, Hand of the King, oh, what a great man that one is, him and his gold this and gold that and lions here and lions there. I'll wager you, he eats too many beans, he breaks wind just like me, but you'll never hear him admit it, oh, no.[11]

Kevan should be the Warden of the West. Or you. It's not that I'm not grateful for the honor, mind you, but our uncle's twice my age and has more experience of command. I hope he knows I never asked for this.[10]
