Responsibilities
The Warden of the West is tasked with defending the western regions of the Seven Kingdoms from invaders.[3] Although now part of the realm, men from the Iron Islands historically raided the shores of the Sunset Sea,[4] and some ironborn desire a return to the Old Way.[5]
History
Loren I Lannister, King of the Rock, was captured the day after the Field of Fire during Aegon's Conquest. Loren the Last submitted to King Aegon I Targaryen, and was named the first Warden of the West.[2]
Lord Tywin Lannister, Warden of the West, and Lord Eddard Stark, Warden of the North, supported King Robert I Baratheon during Greyjoy's Rebellion.[6]
Recent Events
A Storm of Swords
Lord Tywin Lannister, Warden of the West and Hand of the King, is murdered by his son Tyrion in the Tower of the Hand.[7]
A Feast for Crows
Cersei Lannister, the Queen Regent, wants her uncle, Ser Kevan Lannister, to succeed her father as Hand, but Kevan insists he will only do so if he is named regent in her place and she removes herself to Casterly Rock.[8] Cersei instead names Ser Harys Swyft as Hand, Ser Damion Lannister as castellan of the Rock, and Ser Daven Lannister as Warden of the West.[9]
Daven participates in the siege of Riverrun.[10]

Quotes
Kingslayer. An able and courageous man, no doubt, but his father is Warden of the West, Robert. In time Ser Jaime will succeed to that honor. No one man should hold both East and West.[1]
Lord Tywin the proud and splendid, Warden of the West, Hand of the King, oh, what a great man that one is, him and his gold this and gold that and lions here and lions there. I'll wager you, he eats too many beans, he breaks wind just like me, but you'll never hear him admit it, oh, no.[11]
