A Game of Thrones
The wineseller is part of the trade caravan of Byan Votyris, encamped in the Western Market of Vaes Dothrak. He offers Daenerys Targaryen a taste of sweet Dornish red, initially believing her to be Tyroshi due to her speaking in the High Valyrian of the Free Cities. After Doreah identifies her, the wineseller tries gives her a cask of dry red from the Arbor, hoping she will drink the poisoned wine and he will reap the castle and lordship offered by Robert Baratheon for the death of Viserys or that of Daenerys and her unborn child. After Ser Jorah Mormont, who has learned of the assassination attempt from a letter from Illyrio Mopatis, intervenes and demands a taste, the wineseller tries to stall but relents and pours him a cup. He then tries to flee after Jorah and Daenerys demand him to taste the wine first. He is stopped, however, by Jhogo. Byan Votyris orders two of his words to keep the wineseller imprisoned to be sentenced by Drogo and offers his goods to Daenerys as a token of regret.
Drogo sentences that, as he had tried to run from Daenerys, he should run after her. The day Drogo's khalasar departs Vaes Dothrak, the wineseller is stripped naked and chained from throat and wrists to Daenerys' silver, forced to run after her, barefoot and stumbling, until his death.

Daenerys: I need clever men about me if I am to win the Iron Throne.
Jorah: That wineseller who tried to poison you was a clever man as well. Clever men hatch ambitious schemes.Daenerys: You will protect me. You, and my bloodriders.
