Yoren's last Night's Watch recruitment group is the last group of recruits that Yoren, a wandering crow, tried to bring to the Wall before his death.
Yoren's last batch of recruits consists of approximately thirty people, but only 19 named recruits, with seven being criminals since Yoren found them in the dungeons of the Red Keep of King's Landing, including three from the Black cells (Jaqen H'ghar, Rorge, and Biter), which Yoren keeps fettered hand and foot in the back of a wagon, and vows that they will stay in irons all the way to the Wall.[1]
This group is notable because it also includes Arya Stark, whom Yoren found in the middle of the crowd at the Great Sept of Baelor when her father, Lord Eddard Stark, was getting beheaded,[2] as well as Gendry, one of King Robert I Baratheon's bastard sons, who joined Yoren's band after Lord Varys had Tobho Mott send him to Yoren to protect him from Cersei Lannister after Ned's downfall.[3][4]
After his party is stopped by gold cloaks in search of Gendry, Yoren decides to avoid the busy Kingsroad.[5] The recruits rest at an abandoned town on the southern shore of the Gods Eye, where Yoren assigns Tarber, Cutjack, and Kurz the task of holding vigil at the town's towerhouse. Kurz, a criminal who had been arrested as a poacher, blows his hunting horn when Westermen under the command of Ser Amory Lorch approach the town that night to burn it down, with most of the group being killed.[6] However, Lorch's men cannot put the towerhouse on fire and they have no patience to starve the three out.[7] Kurz dies from an infection caused by an arrow wound, after which Tarber and Cutjack take everything of value and abandon the youths, Arry, Gendry, Hot Pie, and Lommy, who had survived Lorch's attack by escaping via a tunnel.[7] The youths are eventually captured in a village by the Gods Eye by the Mountain's men, however, and Lommy is killed.[7]
