The Brimstone is a river in southern Dorne[1] known for its sulfurous waters.[2]
Geography
[edit]The Brimstone is a placid river that courses to southern Dorne and drains into the Summer Sea. The river's cloudy yellow waters stink of sulfur, and the plants that grow along its banks are strange and stunted.[3] The fish that swim in the sulfurous waters sicken the men that eat them.[4]
The Hellholt, the seat of House Uller, sits next to the river.[5] Maester Yandel is reluctant to speak of the strange people that live on the banks of the Brimstone.[3] Hellgate Hall was presumably found along the river, as House Dryland once ruled as Kings of the Brimstone.[3]
The Greenblood, the Torrentine, and the Brimstone are the only rivers of Dorne which never go dry.[3]
History
[edit]
During the coming of the Andals, the Ullers raised the Hellholt, a grim and stinking keep, on the banks of the Brimstone.[6] House Dryland ruled as Kings of the Brimstone from Hellgate Hall until the last of their line, Lucifer Dryland, was sent to the Wall by Nymeria.[7]
During the First Dornish War, King Aegon I Targaryen had Lord Harlan Tyrell garrison his invading host at the abandoned Hellholt, for it was a strong castle on the Brimstone, and thought to be well situated to deal with any revolts against House Targaryen. However, the fish taken from the sulfurous river made Lord Tyrell's men sicken.[4]
When Lord Alyn Velaryon sailed past Dorne towards Lord Dalton Greyjoy in 133 AC, a sudden storm briefly scattered his fleet. Near the mouth of the Brimstone, a damaged galley put in to take aboard fresh water and make repairs, but was attacked under the cover of darkness by bandits, who slaughtered her crew and looted her supplies.[8]
Quotes
[edit]The Brimstone is a far more placid stream, but its cloudy yellow waters stink of sulfur, and the plants that grow along its banks are strange and stunted things. (Of the men who live along those selfsame banks, we shall not speak).[3]
