The dungeons under Dragonstone[1] are where prisoners are held by the lord of Dragonstone.
Layout
[edit]A high stone-roofed bridge arching over emptiness leads from the Stone Drum to the entrance towards Dragonstone's dungeons.[2] A turnpike stair and smooth stony passages lead to windowless cells beneath the castle, whose thick stone walls in the dark dungeon.[3][2] Cells in the dungeon are dank and warm, and rats are common.[3]
History
[edit]Following the death of Rhaenyra Targaryen, her half-brother King Aegon II Targaryen insisted that Rhaenyra's son, the young prince Aegon, was valuable as a hostage against Rhaenyra's supporters, so he was manacled and brought to the dungeons under Dragonstone.[1]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Septon Barre protests when men sworn to Queen Selyse Florent sack the sept at Dragonstone, so he is thrown into the Dragonstone's dungeons, along with the two surviving sons of Ser Hubard Rambton, who defended the sept from the queen's men by force, and pious Lord Guncer Sunglass, who renounces his support for Stannis Baratheon.[4] The latter three are eventually burned for treason by Melisandre and Selyse.[5]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]When Ser Davos Seaworth returns to Dragonstone after being rescued from Blackwater Bay, Ser Axell Florent has the Onion Knight arrested for plotting to kill Melisandre.[5] Maester Pylos treats the ill Davos with hot garlic broth, milk of the poppy, and leechings. Davos is quick to nickname the two gaolers in the dungeon as Porridge and Lamprey.[3] Melisandre visits Davos in an effort to gain him as an ally, but he rejects her.[3]
When Lord Alester Florent plots to wed Stannis Baratheon's daughter, Princess Shireen, to King Joffrey Baratheon's brother, Prince Tommen Baratheon, in an effort to make peace with the Iron Throne without Stannis's knowledge, he is thrown into Dragonstone's dungeons, in the same cell as Davos. The courtly Alester finds the dungeon repugnant.[3]
Davos is eventually released by Stannis, who names him as Lord of the Rainwood, Admiral of the Narrow Sea, and Hand of the King, while Alester is to be burned for treason.[2]
