Three-Finger Hobb is the main cook at Castle Black for the Night's Watch.[2]

Appearance and Character

Hobb's nickname suggests one of his hands is maimed. The cook is famous for this three-meat stew, which members of the Watch say consists of mutton, mutton, and mutton.[3]

Recent Events

A Game of Thrones

Three-Finger Hobb cooks a special meal for the eight recruits (Todder, Halder, Grenn, Dareon, Albett, Pypar, Matthar and Jon Snow) ready to become men of the Night's Watch and swear their oaths. They enjoy "rack of lamb baked in a crust of garlic and herbs, garnished with sprigs of mint, and surrounded by mashed yellow turnips swimming in butter." Hobb also prepares "salads of spinach and chickpeas and turnip greens, and afterward bowls of iced blueberries and sweet cream."[4]

After Castle Black learns that Jon's father, Lord Eddard Stark, has been imprisoned in King's Landing, Hobb gives Jon an extra helping of venison stew.[2]

Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, complains to Jon that the last mutton served by Hobb was grey.[5] On a later occasion, Hobb's breakfast for Jeor includes "three brown eggs boiled hard, with fried bread and ham steak and a bowl of wrinkled plums", as well as a lemon for the Lord Commander's beer.[6]

A Storm of Swords

While part of the great ranging, Samwell Tarly thinks fondly of Hobb's "thick cream of wheat, with a big spoon of butter melting in the middle and a dollop of honey".[7]

Three-Finger Hobb is among those left behind by Bowen Marsh when the First Steward sets off after wildling raiders.[8] Women and children from Mole's Town help Hobb in the kitchen.[9] Hobb and his helpers stay safe atop the Wall during the attack on Castle Black by Styr,[9] and he gives black bread and onion broth to the defenders when they oppose Mance Rayder's wildlings.[10]

Following the battle beneath the Wall, Hobb is among the candidates at the choosing of the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He promises roast haunch of mammoth in hopes of gaining votes.[11] Jon Snow is eventually chosen, however.[12]

A Feast for Crows

Hobb gives Samwell salted ham for his name day.[13]

A Dance with Dragons

Three-Finger Hobb gathers with two score other black brothers near the gate of Castle Black after word spreads that the heads of three rangers have been found impaled on spikes on the other side of the Wall. Lord Commander Snow verifies that Jack Bulwer, Hairy Hal, and Garth Greyfeather have been slain by the Weeper. A friend of Garth's, Alf of Runnymudd, breaks down at the news, and Hobb is ordered by Jon to get Alf to bed and give him mulled wine.[14]

Devan Seaworth delivers fresh bread from Hobb's ovens to Melisandre.[14]

Three-Finger Hobb prepares elk and roast vegetables for the feast after Alys Karstark weds Sigorn; Jon is impressed with the meal, as Hobb has no experience in cooking for wildlings or preparing for wedding feasts. The cook also mulls wine with cinnamon and cloves.[15]

Quotes by Hobb

You're a man who appreciates cooking, Slayer. We need more o' your sort.[13]

Quotes about Hobb

Samwell: Who are these five who keep voting for Three-Finger Hobb?
Clydas: Brothers who want him out of the kitchens?[11]

Bowen: Who better to command the black cloaks than a man who once commanded the gold, sire?
Stannis: Any of you, I would think. Even the cook.[16]

Three corns and one roast raven. Very good, m'lord, only Hobb's made boiled eggs, black sausage, and apples stewed with prunes. The apples stewed with prunes are excellent, except for the prunes. I won't eat prunes myself. Well, there was one time when Hobb chopped them up with chestnuts and carrots and hid them in a hen. Never trust a cook, my lord. They'll prune you when you least expect it.[17]

Hobb's sausages were made of grease and salt and things that did not bear thinking about.[18]
