Johanna Lannister, née Westerling, was the Lady of Casterly Rock through her marriage to Lord Jason Lannister.[2]
History
[edit]Lady Johanna was the daughter of Roland Westerling, Lord of the Crag.[1]
During the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, Johanna's husband, Lord Jason Lannister, and his twin brother, Ser Tyland, supported the greens. Jason led his banners and marched to the field in support of King Aegon II Targaryen, but he was slain in the Battle at the Red Fork in 130 AC.[3] After Jason's death, Johanna ruled Casterly Rock as a regent for their young son, Lord Loreon Lannister.[1] Dalton Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, took advantage of the situation and attacked the westerlands, causing much damage to the region. Lady Johanna barred the gates of the Rock, but the Red Kraken captured most of the Lannister fleet, burned the rest, and sacked nearby Lannisport.[4]
As one of the Three Widows, Johanna agreed to make peace with the blacks after the death of Aegon II in return for the Iron Throne ordering Dalton to return to the Iron Islands, free Fair Isle, and return all captured women.[1] Johanna and her father attended the wedding of King Aegon III Targaryen and Jaehaera Targaryen in King's Landing.[5]
Dalton ignored the commands of the regency of Aegon III to vacate the westerlands. When Johanna began building a new fleet of warships, Dalton attacked the shipyards and captured another hundred women.[5]
Johanna donned mail to lead the remaining Lannister forces in the struggle to drive the ironborn from their shores.[5] Leading a host from Casterly Rock and Lannisport, Johanna routed the ironborn beneath Kayce's walls, with Dalton's uncle slain in the fighting. Songs claim Johanna slew twelve ironmen in the battle at Kayce, although scholars believe she only carried a banner.[5] Johanna next arranged an expedition to recover Fair Isle, but her plan was betrayed to the ironborn. The ragtag fleet sent by the regent was destroyed in an ambush at Fair Isle.[6]
There was a struggle for power among the ironborn after the Red Kraken was murdered at Faircastle a few years later. Since the Lannister fleet had been destroyed by the Greyjoys, Johanna allied with the lord admiral of the Reach, Ser Leo Costayne, to have the westermen invade the Iron Islands in 134 AC. When Rodrik Greyjoy was taken to Casterly Rock as a captive, Johanna had him gelded and made him her son's fool.[2][7]
Johanna reclaimed the dwindling glory of House Lannister and also lent gold to King's Landing to help rebuild the extensive damages caused by the previous civil war.[5][8]
