The sack of Lannisport occurred during the Dance of the Dragons.

Prelude

Dalton Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, was courted by both factions of the Dance of the Dragons, the blacks of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and the greens of King Aegon II Targaryen.^[1] At the start of the war, Ser Otto Hightower, Aegon's Hand of the King, unsuccessfully offered young Dalton the admiralty and a seat on the small council.^[2]

Jason Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and Shield of Lannisport, led his host east in support of Aegon. Jason was soon mortally wounded in the Battle at the Red Fork, however.^[1]

Sack

Dalton, the Red Kraken, took advantage of Lord Jason's absence from Casterly Rock by leading the longships of the Iron Islands against the westerlands. Lady Johanna Lannister, Jason's widow, barred the gates of powerful Casterly Rock, but the ironborn were able to attack the nearby city of Lannisport. Three-quarters of the Lannister fleet in the harbor were captured by the ironmen, with the rest sunk by the attackers. The ironborn then sacked Lannisport after swarming its walls, escaping with considerable wealth. More than six hundred women and girls were abducted to become salt wives and thralls, with Jason's favorite mistress and his natural daughters among them.^[1]

Aftermath

Dalton continued his raids, attacking Fair Isle and harrying the shores of the westerlands. Casterly Rock was thrown into disarray after the deaths of Lord Jason at the Red Fork and defeat of his remaining host at the Battle by the Lakeshore.^[3] Johanna took leadership as regent for her young son, Lord Loreon Lannister, however.^[4] One of Dalton's twenty-two salt wives was a Lannister of Lannisport.^[5]
