The coronation of Rhaenyra Targaryen occurred in 129 AC near the start of the Dance of the Dragons.

Prelude

King Viserys I Targaryen chose Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, his daughter by his first queen, Aemma Arryn, as his preferred heir over Prince Aegon Targaryen, the king's eldest son by his second queen, Alicent Hightower.[1] After Viserys died in his sleep within the Red Keep in 129 AC, Alicent concealed the king's death from the public and gathered support in King's Landing for her son, Aegon the Elder, against the claim of Rhaenyra, who was pregnant at Dragonstone. Aegon II was soon crowned at the Dragonpit in King's Landing with the crown of King Aegon I Targaryen.[2]

When Rhaenyra learned about the death of her father and the betrayal of her siblings, her anger made her go into labor which lasted for three days and brought forth a stillborn, deformed girl, whom she named Visenya. In answer to Aegon's betrayal and the death of her daughter, Rhaenyra swore revenge. She met with her chief supporters, the so-called black council, and made plans for her own coronation. Ser Steffon Darklyn of the Kingsguard, choosing Rhaenyra over Aegon, fled to Dragonstone to give Rhaenyra the crown of her father.[2]

Coronation

Rhaenyra was hastily crowned at Dragonstone the day after meeting with her councilors. Three hundred were in attendance as Rhaenyra's husband, Prince Daemon Targaryen, placed the crown of King Viserys I and King Jaehaerys I Targaryen on her head and proclaimed her Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Daemon styled himself Protector of the Realm, and Rhaenyra appointed her eldest son, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, as Prince of Dragonstone and her heir to the Iron Throne.[2]

Aftermath

Aegon II became outraged after learning of his half sister's coronation, but was convinced to allow Grand Maester Orwyle to travel under a peace banner to meet with Rhaenyra. Orwyle's mission was unsuccessful, however, and civil war broke out in the Seven Kingdoms with the Dance of the Dragons.[2] Lord Larys Strong gathered a list of lords who attended Rhaenyra's coronation and sat on her council.[3]
