The coronation of Aegon II Targaryen occurred in 129 AC near the start of the Dance of the Dragons.
Prelude
King Viserys I Targaryen chose Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, his daughter by his first queen, Aemma Arryn, as his preferred heir over Prince Aegon Targaryen, the king's eldest son by his second queen, Alicent Hightower.[1] After Viserys died in his sleep within the Red Keep in 129 AC, Alicent concealed the king's death from the public and gathered support in King's Landing for her son, Aegon the Elder, against the claim of Rhaenyra, who was pregnant at Dragonstone. After the death of Lord Lyman Beesbury, the small council began making plans for Aegon's coronation. According to Septon Eustace, Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, convinced a reluctant Prince Aegon to accept the Iron Throne because his mother, brothers, sister and children would otherwise be killed by Rhaenyra.[2]
Aegon chose to don the crown of King Aegon I Targaryen for his reign. Alicent, the dowager queen, ordered that Viserys's crown be locked away, but the steward carrying it disappeared instead. Ser Steffon Darklyn of the Kingsguard, choosing Rhaenyra over Aegon, fled to Dragonstone to give Rhaenyra the crown of her father.[2]
Coronation
Aegon II's hastily-arranged coronation was held in the Dragonpit because of its seating capacity and defensibility. Ser Criston placed Aegon the Conqueror's crown on the new monarch's brow and proclaimed him King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. Alicent then placed her own crown atop Helaena Targaryen, Aegon's sister-wife. Septon Eustace anointed Aegon's brow with holy oils and blessed him in the names of the Seven.[2]
Grand Maester Munkun wrote about Grand Maester Orwyle's claim that more than a hundred thousand smallfolk were in attendance, with their cheers shaking the walls of the Dragonpit. Rhaenyra's fool Mushroom, however, wrote that the benches were only half full.[2]
After his coronation, Aegon flew on his dragon, Sunfyre, three times around King's Landing before landing in the Red Keep. Ser Arryk Cargyll of the Kingsguard escorted the new king to the throne room, where he sat the Iron Throne before a thousand lords and knights.[2]
Aftermath
After bringing forth a stillborn, deformed girl she named Visenya, Rhaenyra had her own coronation at Dragonstone.[2]
