Princess Vaella Targaryen, called Vaella the Simple, was the daughter of Prince Daeron Targaryen and Kiera of Tyrosh.[1]
Character
Vaella was sweet but simple-minded.[2]
History
Vaella was born in 222 AC to Prince Daeron the Drunken, the eldest son of King Maekar I Targaryen,[2] and Kiera of Tyrosh, the widow of Prince Valarr Targaryen, Daeron's cousin.[1] Her father, then Prince of Dragonstone and Maekar's heir, died before his own father when Vaella was still young, leaving her as his only heir.[3]
When King Maekar died in 233 AC in battle against a rebel lord, a Great Council was called to settle the murky question of his successor. As the only child of Maekar's eldest son, Vaella's claim to the Iron Throne was considered, but dismissed immediately by the lords before any of the other candidates,[2] both on account of her mental capacity and gender. Ultimately, the Great Council instead chose Vaella's uncle, Maekar's youngest son Aegon, and declared him Aegon the Fifth of His Name.[3]

Quotes about Vaella

Instead [Maester Aemon] served at the keep of his eldest brother, another Daeron. Well, that one died too, leaving only a feeble-witted daughter as heir.[3]
—Jeor Mormont to Jon Snow
Jon: The lords passed over Prince Aerion's infant son and Prince Daeron's daughter and gave the crown to Aegon.
Jeor: Yes and no. First they offered it, quietly, to Aemon. And quietly he refused. […] Well, no sane man wanted any blood of Aerion's on the throne, and Daeron's girl was a lackwit besides being female, so they had no choice but to turn to Aemon's younger brother—Aegon, the Fifth of His Name.[3]—Jon Snow and Jeor Mormont

With both of Maekar's elder sons deceased, there were four possible claimants. The Great Council dismissed Prince Daeron's sweet but simple-minded daughter Vaella immediately.[2]
