Matarys Targaryen, called the Even Younger Prince by Lord Gawen Swann's fool, was the second son of Prince Baelor Targaryen and Lady Jena Dondarrion.[1][5]

Matarys was considered sweet and full of promise.[4]
History
As the second son to King Daeron II Targaryen's heir, Matarys was in line for the Iron Throne. While his brother Valarr was nicknamed the Young Prince, Matarys was dubbed the Even Younger Prince by Lord Gawen Swann's fool.[1] However, after his father Baelor had died in 209 AC during the Ashford Tourney, the Great Spring Sickness struck Westeros. Matarys died from the illness, as did his older brother Valarr and grandfather, King Daeron II, in King's Landing.[4] This ended the line of Prince Baelor, and led to the ascent of his brother as King Aerys I Targaryen.[5] Matarys was likely a teenager at the time of his death.[N 1] It is unknown whether Matarys passed away before or after his older brother Valarr.
Matarys was mourned after his death. Septon Sefton, who was in King's Landing during the Great Spring Sickness, recalled Matarys's among the thousands of deaths during that time.[4] Later, a hunchbacked septon preaching against the new Hand of the King, Lord Brynden Rivers, alluded to Matarys's death. Afer alluding to Bloodraven's history of kinslaying during the First Blackfyre Rebellion, the septon implied that both Matarys's death and the other recent deaths of his near kin were Bloodraven's work too.[6]

A Clash of Kings
While explaining the lineage of Maester Aemon to Jon Snow, Lord Commander Jeor Mormont says that Prince Baelor's two sons soon followed their father to the grave in the Great Spring Sickness.[7]
A Feast for Crows
Discussing both their fathers' objections to them becoming maesters, Maester Aemon,[8] Matarys's cousin,[5] tells Samwell Tarly that his grandfather sent him to the Citadel because too many dragons were as dangerous as too few. He mentions that King Daeron had four sons, three of whom had sons of their own.[8] As the second son of King Daeron's eldest child, Prince Baelor, Matarys was one of the sons of the king's sons[5] alluded to by Aemon.[8]

- ↑ When Duncan the Tall first meets Aerion Targaryen, who is near Dunk's own age, in The Hedge Knight, he judges that Aerion could be Valarr, Matarys or one of their cousins based on his youth. Since Dunk himself is sixteen or seventeen, this implies Matarys is also a teenager in 209 AC.
