Vaemond Velaryon was a knight from House Velaryon during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen.[1] He was the son of the elder of Lord Corlys Velaryon's brothers. Vaemond had two sons, Daemion and Daeron Velaryon.[2]
In the television adaptation House of the Dragon, Vaemond is the younger brother of Corlys instead of his nephew and he is portrayed by Wil Johnson.[3]
History
In 126 AC, when Lord Corlys Velaryon, Lord of the Tides, was struck by a sudden fever and fell gravely ill, a discussion began about the succession to Driftmark. Though both of Corlys's children, Laena and Laenor Velaryon, had died six years before, Laena's two daughters (Rhaena and Baela Targaryen) and Laenor's three sons (Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey Velaryon) still lived. Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, who had been married to Laenor, urged Corlys to choose Lucerys as his heir.[1]
Vaemond, the eldest of Lord Velaryon's six nephews, insisted he should be Corlys's chosen successor, claiming that Laenor's three sons were not fathered by Laenor at all, and accusing Rhaenyra of having committed adultery with the late Ser Harwin Strong (this would have ignored the fact that Laena's daughters still stood ahead of Vaemond in the line of succession).[1]
In response, Rhaenyra dispatched her new husband, Prince Daemon Targaryen, to seize Ser Vaemond. She had Vaemond's head removed and fed his carcass to her dragon, Syrax. Vaemond's five younger cousins had their tongues removed afterwards by King Viserys I Targaryen, Rhaenyra's father, for repeating the rumors about her three sons by Laenor.[1]
Vaemond's sons, Daemion and Daeron Velaryon, presented their own claims to Driftmark after Corlys died in 132 AC, but the regency of Aegon III chose Alyn Velaryon to be the new Lord of the Tides instead.[4]
