Three-Finger Hobb cooks a special meal for the eight recruits (Todder, Halder, Grenn, Dareon, Albett, Pypar, Matthar and Jon Snow) ready to become men of the Night's Watch and swear their oaths. They enjoy "rack of lamb baked in a crust of garlic and herbs, garnished with sprigs of mint, and surrounded by mashed yellow turnips swimming in butter." Hobb also prepares "salads of spinach and chickpeas and turnip greens, and afterward bowls of iced blueberries and sweet cream."[5]

Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, complains to Jon that the last mutton served by Hobb was grey.[6] On a later occasion, Hobb's breakfast for Jeor includes "three brown eggs boiled hard, with fried bread and ham steak and a bowl of wrinkled plums", as well as a lemon for the Lord Commander's beer.[7]
