The She-Wolves of Winterfell is the working title given to the as-yet unpublished fourth or fifth Tales of Dunk and Egg novella,[1] once intended to be published in an anthology named Dangerous Women[2][3] but now postponed.[4][1] George R.R. Martin has stated that he does not know which will be finished first, this story or the one with the working title The Village Hero. He has said that he will not know more about completing either novella until he has finished The Winds of Winter.[1][5]
Plot
The novella is set in Winterfell. According to Martin, it will feature Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who will meet the "She-Wolves":[2] a group of formidable Stark wives, widows, mothers and grandmothers.[1] According to fans' con reports, four of these "she-wolves" may be widows of previous Lords of Winterfell, and one the current Lady Stark whose husband Beron Stark is dying from a wound taken while fighting Ironborn.[6] There may be a House Stark succession crisis, a struggle for power among the Stark ladies on behalf of their children, of which there were at least ten at the time.[7] Additionally, Martin mentioned this story in connection with the fact that there has never been a ruling Lady of Winterfell.[8]
The She-Wolves
The identity of the five "She-Wolves" has not been revealed yet. However, with the Stark lineage given in The World of Ice and Fire, their names may be deduced:
Lady Lorra Royce, the soon to be widow of Lord Beron Stark.
Lady Myriame Manderly, widow of Lord Rodwell Stark and Beron's sister-in-law.
Lady Alys Karstark, widow of Lord Brandon Stark and Beron's mother.
Lady Robyn Ryswell, widow of Lord Jonnel Stark and Beron's aunt by marriage.
Lady Lynara Stark, widow of Lord Cregan Stark and Beron's grandmother.
Moreover, four Stark women — Arsa, Serena, and her daughters Arrana and Aregelle — might be engaged to various degrees into the power struggle following Beron's injury even though they did not marry a Lord of Winterfell.[N 1] Also, Beron's son (and future Lord) Willam Stark's wives — Lyanne Glover and Melantha Blackwood — may be potentially involved if Willam married one or both of them before his father's death.

- ↑ For example, Serena Stark was the daughter of Cregan Stark's eldest son Rickon, who died long before his father did. Serena married her father's half brother Edric Stark, who died during the reign of his elder brother Lord Jonnel did and before his younger brothers Barthogan and then Brandon became the lord. Arguably Serena had a right to Winterfell's seat herself but was bypassed (since there has never been a ruling lady of Winterfell[8]), or she could argue that Edric's sons Cregard and Torrhen had a better right than Brandon or Brandon's son Beron did.
