Prince Lewyn Nymeros Martell, better known simply as Lewyn Martell or Lewyn of Dorne,[1] was a knight from House Martell who served as a member of Aerys II Targaryen's Kingsguard. He was the uncle of the current Prince of Dorne, Doran Martell.[3]
History
[edit]Prince Lewyn was the younger brother of the former ruling Princess of Dorne. Lewyn was among the Dornishmen who came to court at King's Landing with his niece, Princess Elia Martell,[4] who was betrothed in early 279 AC and married a year later in 280 AC, to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.[5] He became a confidante of Rhaegar's.[4] Lewyn was appointed a member of the Kingsguard in the service of King Aerys II Targaryen at an unknown time.
Lewyn was present at the tourney at Harrenhal in 281 AC.[6]
During Robert's Rebellion, Aerys used Lewyn's niece, Elia, as a hostage against him, and sent him to command the ten thousand Dornishmen that were to join Rhaegar's force that was assembling to take on Lord Robert Baratheon.[7] Lewyn died during the Battle of the Trident in 283 AC at the hands of Ser Lyn Corbray, although he was mortally wounded before his final duel with Lyn.[8]
Dorne was incensed by the deaths of Lewyn and Elia during the war, and Prince Oberyn Martell tried to raise the kingdom to support Viserys Targaryen, the surviving son of the late Aerys. In response, Lord Jon Arryn travelled to Sunspear the year after Robert took the throne (284 AC) to return the bones of Lewyn and was able to broker a peace with Doran Martell, the ruling Prince of Dorne.[9]
Arianne Martell recalls her great-uncle fondly, remembering when she was a little girl how her great-uncle Lewyn would tower over her and tickle her till she could barely breathe from laughter.[2]
It was a closely held secret that Prince Lewyn kept a paramour despite the Kingsguard oaths of chastity.[2] Ser Barristan Selmy and his other sworn brothers were aware of this but kept their sworn brother's secret.[10]
