Magister is a title held by wealthy and powerful individuals in some Free Cities. It is similar to the qhoran or Westerosi steward.[1]
Magisters have kept records of their cities since their foundations as freeholds during the time of Valyria.[2] Magisters sometimes post Unsullied at their gates.[3] Magisters in Myr, Norvos, and Pentos give lavishly to passing khals to convince the Dothraki to continue on their way.[4]
Free Cities
[edit]The council of magisters in Pentos, nobles who elect the Prince of Pentos, are the practical rulers of the city.[5] They sometimes lend money.[6]
In Braavos, magisters and keyholders participate in the election of the Sealord.[7]
While Lorath is nominally ruled by three princes, the city is truly ruled by a council of magisters.[8]
The council of magisters in Norvos is subservient to the bearded priests of that city.[9]
Lys is ruled by a conclave of magisters, and Myr is led by a conclave as well.[10] A similar group chooses the Archon of Tyrosh.[10]
History
[edit]The Triarchy was ruled by a council of thirty-three magisters,[11] with Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh each supplying eleven members.[12]
Magisters, archons, and merchant princes of the Free Cities initially welcomed Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen after they departed the house with the red door in Braavos. The exiles ended up being hosted by Illyrio Mopatis in Pentos.[13]
