The fish market[1] or fishmarket[2] of King's Landing is located in the south of the city near the Blackwater Rush and the harbor.[3]

Layout

The fishmarket is located outside of the River Gate,[2] with Fishmonger's Square found within the gate.[3]

History

As King's Landing developed around the court of King Aegon I Targaryen, a fish market sprang up along the riverside of the Blackwater Rush.[4]

During the battle, Ser Davos Seaworth sees that the Lannisters burned the riverfront and retreated to the Mud Gate.[7] Tyrion sees the desolation of the fishmarket and the wharves.[8]

A Storm of Swords

After the battle, Tyrion reports that the entire fish market is gone and that the River Gate should be replaced.[9]

Quotes

She could hear the clamor of the fish market even at this distance.[1]

—thoughts of Catelyn Stark

Bronn and the escort were waiting at the foot of the quay, amidst swarming beggars, strolling whores, and fishwives crying the catch. The fishwives did more business than all the rest combined. Buyers flocked around the barrels and stalls to haggle over winkles, clams, and river pike. With no other food coming into the city, the price of fish was ten times what it had been before the war, and still rising. Those who had coin came to the riverfront each morning and each evening, in hopes of bringing home an eel or a pot of red crabs; those who did not slipped between the stalls hoping to steal, or stood gaunt and forlorn beneath the walls.[6]
