Snails are known for their slow pace.[1][2] A rich food,[3] snails are often served with honey,[4] butter,[5] or garlic.[1]

Dyers from Tyrosh and Braavos use sea snails to make their dyes.[6]

Known as the Snail, Ser Uthor Underleaf included a snail in his heraldry. He clasped his cloak with a snail made of silver, and his solid silver wine cup had a line of golden snails inlaid around the lip.[7][8]

History

Sea snail found near Tyrosh

Sea snails found only near Tyrosh were used to make a deep dark reddish dye popular in Valyria, bringing thousands of merchants to the young city. By varying the diet of the snails, dyers from Tyrosh were also able to create scarlet, crimson, and deep indigo dyes.[6]

A sea snail akin to those of Tyrosh was discovered near Braavos. Its dark purple dye was used by Braavosi to change the color of their sails and disguise their stolen ships.[8]
