Harren the Red's rebellion was a revolt by Harren the Red against the Iron Throne in 37 AC.
History
During the Conquest, King Aegon I Targaryen slew Harren Hoare, King of the Isles and the Rivers, in the burning of Harrenhal.[1] The realm of Harren the Black was then divided between the Iron Islands, ruled by House Greyjoy, and the riverlands, ruled by House Tully. Within the riverlands, Aegon granted rule over Harrenhal to House Qoherys.[2]
The lecherous Gargon Qoherys, Lord of Harrenhal, was disliked for practicing the first night within his domains and for taking advantage of his servants. While King Aenys I Targaryen was at Riverrun during a royal progress after succeeding Aegon on the Iron Throne, the father of a maid dishonored by Gargon opened a postern gate at Harrenhal to the outlaw Harren the Red, who claimed to be Harren the Black's grandson. Gargon the Guest was killed by Red Harren in the godswood of Harrenhal, and most of Harrenhal's men-at-arms joined the brigands. Harren called himself Lord of Harrenhal and King of the Rivers.[3]
Lord Tully urged King Aenys to fly to Harrenhal on Quicksilver, his dragon, and quickly end Harren's rebellion, but Aenys instead ordered Lord Tully to call his banners. By the time Aenys eventually marched on Harrenhal with a thousand men, the castle had been abandoned with Harren fled to the woods.[3]
Aenys's reign was also troubled by Jonos Arryn's rebellion in the Vale of Arryn, Lodos the Twice-Drowned's revolt in the Iron islands, and the Second Dornish War.[3] Worried that Red Harren might threaten King's Landing, King Aenys sent Queen Alyssa Velaryon and their younger children to the safety of Dragonstone.[3]
Lord Alyn Stokeworth, Hand of the King, led a few hundred men,[3] including Myles Smallwood,[4] to hunt down Harren. The royal host eventually caught the river rebels in a village west of the Gods Eye. Harren slew Lord Stokeworth and was in turn slain by Alyn's squire, Bernarr Brune. Aenys rewarded Bernarr with knighthood.[3]
