In 239 AC, Lord Lyonel Baratheon of Storm's End rebelled against the Iron Throne.
Prelude
[edit]Lyonel Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End, had always been one of King Aegon V Targaryen's most loyal supporters. They had such a strong friendship, that in 237 AC, the king gladly agreed to betroth his eldest son and heir, Duncan Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, to Lyonel's daughter.[2][1] However, in 239 AC, Duncan was traveling in the riverlands when he met and became smitten with a mysterious peasant woman named Jenny of Oldstones. Setting aside his betrothal, Prince Duncan married Jenny then and there. The king did all he could to have the marriage undone, but the prince stubbornly refused him, even when the High Septon, Grand Maester, and small council joined together to insist King Aegon force his son to choose between the Iron Throne and his new wife. Refusing to give up Jenny, Duncan renounced his inheritance in favor of his younger brother Jaehaerys, and abdicated as Prince of Dragonstone.[2][N 1]
The Rebellion
[edit]Unfortunately, even Duncan's abdication could not restore the peace. Prince Duncan's actions wounded Lyonel Baratheon's pride, caused great grief to his daughter, and brought shame and dishonor to House Baratheon.[2][1] Lyonel was so angry that he swore a bloody oath of vengeance and renounced his allegiance to the throne, having himself crowned as a new Storm King.[1] The rebellion was short, but bloody.[2] Peace was restored only after Ser Duncan the Tall of the Kingsguard defeated Lyonel in single combat and King Aegon vowed that his youngest daughter, Princess Rhaelle, would wed Lyonel's heir, Ormund Baratheon.[2][1]
Aftermath
[edit]To seal the bargain, Princess Rhaelle was sent to Storm's End, to serve as Lord Lyonel's cupbearer and companion to his lady wife.[2] Rhaelle married Lord Ormund Baratheon in 245 AC.[1] Jenny of Oldstones, now called Lady Jenny by courtesy, was eventually accepted at the court in King's Landing. She and her husband, now known as the Prince of Dragonflies, were beloved of the smallfolk, and a favorite subject of singers for many years.[2][1]
The match that King Aegon V Targaryen agreed to in order to bring peace, ultimately led to the end of Targaryen rule in the Seven Kingdoms, when Rhaelle and Ormund's grandson, Robert, rebelled against Jaehaerys's son, King Aerys II Targaryen, and took the throne as King Robert I Baratheon in 282 AC.[1]

The World of Ice & Fire first states that he gave up his claim to the throne before Lyonel's rebellion,[2] but later states that peace was only restored after his renouncement.[1] According to The World of Ice & Fire co-author Elio García, the first statement is "more correct", while the second can be read as "eliding that Duncan gave up his claim fruitlessly" and noting that "it was the end state of things when peace was restored".[3]
