Mervyn was regarded by most as a dutiful and leal man who did as he was told. A seasoned soldier, he wielded a longsword. Like many bastards, he was hot of blood and quick to anger, seeing slights where none had been intended.
According to Mushroom, Mervyn was fond of wine. Mervyn did not remain chaste after being named into the white cloaks. In fact, he was known for using his rough charm on washerwomen and serving girls, and slept with them in his cell at the White Sword Tower.
During the regency of Aegon III in 133 AC, Ser Willis Fell, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, died of the Winter Fever alongside two of his sworn brothers. In their stead, Aegon appointed Ser Robin Massey as Lord Commander and Ser Robert Darklyn to the white cloaks. With the support of Grand Maester Munkun, Lord Unwin Peake, the Hand of the King, dismissed all the appointments and arrangements of the twelve-year-old king, who had not consulted with his regents. His Kingsguard appointments were reversed, with Ser Marston Waters being elevated to Lord Commander while Lord Peake's nephew, Ser Amaury Peake, and bastard-half brother, Ser Mervyn, were made knights of the Kingsguard.
In 135 AC after the secret siege ended, the real conspirators were gathered up. Mervyn killed his own sworn brother and Lord Commander, Ser Marston Waters, who had tried to arrest Mervyn in the stables, by plunging his dagger into his belly. Mervyn tried to escape, but he was found saddling his horse by a drunk man-at-arms and two stableboys. Mervyn slew them, but the commotion alerted others who overwhelmed and beat him to death, still wearing the white cloak that he had dishonored.
