Renly's ghost,[1][2] also called Renly's shade,[3] is what smallfolk believe leads a decisive moment during the Battle of the Blackwater.

A Game of Thrones
Renly Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End, has splendid green armor made by Tobho Mott.[4] Renly declares himself king in the aftermath of the death of his eldest brother, King Robert I Baratheon.[5]
A Clash of Kings
During the War of the Five Kings, Renly is slain by shadow near Storm's End.[6] Some of Renly's supporters join his elder brother Stannis,[7] and there is fighting at Bitterbridge between Florents and Tarlys.[8]
On behalf of King Joffrey I Baratheon, Lord Petyr Baelish hurries from King's Landing to Bitterbridge to meet with Ser Loras Tyrell,[7] continuing on to Highgarden to successfully negotiate with Mace and Olenna Tyrell.[9]
The Tyrells join with Lord Tywin Lannister, and together they ride to the rescue of King's Landing during the Battle of the Blackwater. Renly's ghost supposedly kills Ser Guyard Morrigen in single combat, as well as a dozen other knights.[10] Smallfolk say after the battle that Renly's ghost saved the day by attacking Stannis's host in the rear, though the relief was actually led by Tywin, Mace, Petyr, and Loras.[1]
A Storm of Swords
While recuperating from his wounds, Tyrion Lannister learns that much of Stannis's host switched sides during the battle when they saw Renly's green armor.[2]
Captain Khorane Sathmantes tells Ser Davos Seaworth that Renly's shade led Tywin's van during the battle.[11]
Singers in King's Landing compose songs about Renly's ghost.[12] Hamish the Harper performs a song he calls "Lord Renly's Ride" during Joffrey's royal wedding feast.[13]
Loras reveals to Ser Jaime Lannister that it was his elder brother, Ser Garlan Tyrell, who wore Renly's armor at the Blackwater. The idea was suggested by Lord Baelish, who correctly believed the reappearance of Renly would frighten Stannis's ignorant men-at-arms.[14]

King Renly's shade was seen as well, slaying right and left as he led the lion lord's van. It's said his green armor took a ghostly glow from the wildfire, and his antlers ran with golden flames.[3]
Jaime: It's said you fought magnificently in the battle ... almost as well as Lord Renly's ghost beside you. A Sworn Brother has no secrets from his Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Tell me, ser. Who was wearing Renly's armor?
Loras: My brother. Renly was taller than me, and broader in the chest. His armor was too loose on me, but it suited Garlan well.[14]
