Rorge is one of the criminals Yoren recruits to the Night's Watch when he cleans out the dungeons of King’s Landing.[2]
In the television adaptation Game of Thrones, Rorge is portrayed by Andy Beckwith.
Appearance and Character
[edit]Rorge is described as squat, bulky, and hairy, with black hair covering most of his body. He is also described as thick and powerful.[3] Rorge's nose has been cut off,[4] and the nasal bar of the black iron half-helm he comes to wear does not completely conceal the hole where his nose had been.[3] He has an ugly voice[5] and a rattling snore.[6]
Rorge is cruel, vicious, and rapacious.[7][8] Despite his fury, Arya Stark thinks Rorge might be afraid of Jaqen H'ghar.[9]
History
[edit]According to a semi-canon source, Rorge owned a pot shop or tavern in Flea Bottom, that also served as a rat pit where he would stage rat, dog, and bear cub fights for his profit. At some point, he found the orphan child Biter, and raised him ferally to compete in these fights.[10][11]
Recent Events
[edit]A Clash of Kings
[edit]Rorge is one of three known criminals imprisoned in the black cells of the Red Keep.[12] Yoren recruits him for the Night's Watch, but considers him so dangerous that he keeps him chained in a wagon, along with Jaqen H'ghar and Biter, for the journey to the Wall.[4] Rorge often insults the disguised Arya Stark.[7][6]
When Yoren's band is attacked at the Gods Eye by raiders led by Ser Amory Lorch, Rorge and his companions find themselves trapped in the wagon in the middle of a fire. Arya, before escaping herself through a tunnel, throws an axe into the wagon so they can save themselves. Rorge breaks through the bottom of the wagon with the axe.[13] When Arya later investigates the aftermath of the fighting, she finds that Yoren had been slain by an axe blow.[14]
Rorge and his companions, Biter and Jaqen, join Amory's raiding party for a time, eventually arriving at Harrenhal.[15]
The three men remain in the garrison holding Harrenhal after Tywin Lannister departs the castle. They help Arya free the captive northmen during the fall of Harrenhal, though Rorge and Biter do it reluctantly and only because Jaqen requested their help. Rorge cuts the throats of Lannister guards after they have been splashed with boiling broth. With Amory's men slaughtered, Rorge and Biter join the Brave Companions.[5]
Rorge continues to scare Arya at Harrenhal while she serves as Lord Roose Bolton's cupbearer.[16]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Rorge is part of the foraging company who captures Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth near Maidenpool. He immediately threatens Brienne with rape and severely beats Jaime into submission.[3] He later claims the bloodstained surcoat off the corpse of Cleos Frey.[3]
Zollo cuts off Jaime's sword hand,[3] and Rorge kicks Jaime's stump on the way to Harrenhal.[17] Rorge, Shagwell, and Zollo eventually attempt to rape Brienne. Rorge argues with Zollo over who will rape Brienne first, but Jaime thwarts them; Rorge again kicks Jaime's stump. Jaime considers the trio among the worst members of the Brave Companions.[17]
Rorge is one of the many Brave Companions who remain behind at Harrenhal after several failed foraging runs. He is present when Brienne is thrown into the bear pit and threatens Jaime once more when he comes back to save her, but Vargo Hoat orders him to stand down.[18]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]After the capture of Harrenhal and Vargo's death, Rorge went to the inn at the crossroads with Shagwell, Timeon, Pyg and other former Brave Companions. Rorge killed the innkeeper. Then they parted: Shagwell, Timeon, and Pyg went to Maidenpool, while Rorge travelled toward the town of Saltpans with Biter and other former Brave Companions.[19]
Along the way Rorge finds and dons the hound helm once worn by Sandor Clegane. Rorge leads the brutal raid on Saltpans,[20] which results in Sandor being blamed for the attack.[21][8] Rorge supposedly slays a dozen men[22] or even up to twenty men,[23] including the aged Septon Bennet,[24][21] and he rapes a girl of twelve.[24]
Rorge and Biter are among a group of seven outlaws who arrive at the crossroads inn, where they again encounter Brienne of Tarth. When Rorge threatens to rape Willow Heddle, Brienne goads him into attacking her instead. Rorge furiously swings at Brienne with his battle axe, but she patiently defends herself and eventually impales the outlaw with Oathkeeper. A shrieking Biter then knocks Brienne down and starts to eat her face, but she is rescued by Gendry.[8]
When the brotherhood without banners returns to the crossroads inn, the dog helm is taken from Rorge's body by Lem Lemoncloak, who becomes the new Hound.[25]
