Lord of Claw Isle
The Lord of Claw Isle is a title held by the head of House Celtigar, the ruler of Claw Isle.[1].
Contents
History
The Celtigars, a family of Valyrian descent, settled on Claw Isle at an unknown date and became the rulers of the island.[2] They also claimed dominion over Crackclaw Point, but the inhabitants did not acknowledge them as their rulers.[3]
By the time of Aegon's Conquest, the Lords of Claw Isle dominated the middle reaches of the narrow sea. Lord Crispian Celtigar declared for Aegon I Targaryen during his conquest. At the end of the war, Aegon rewarded Lord Crispian by appointing him as master of coin.[4] Lord Crispian was the first of several Celtigars to be named at this position.[5][6]
Lord Alton Celtigar was named Aegon I's Hand of the King in 9 AC, and served ably until his death in 17 AC.[7]
Lord Edwell Celtigar was named as Hand of the King by Aegon I's second son, King Maegor I Targaryen, in 44 AC.[8] In 47 AC, Lord Edwell suggested one or both of his own daughters, Prunella and Prudence, as potential brides for the king, who was in need of an heir. Maegor refused the notion, however. Edwell resigned from his office the following year.[9]
King Jaehaerys I Targaryen pardonned Edwell for having supported Maegor, recalled him from Claw Isle, and named him as his master of coin.[5] When Jaehaerys turned sixteen years old, he kindly dismissed Edwell from office and replaced him with Rego Draz, a wealthy Pentoshi merchant.[10] Edwell died of the Shivers in 59 AC and was succeeded by his son. This new Lord of Claw Isle died of the same disease three days later, however.[11]
During the Dance of the Dragons, old Lord Bartimos Celtigar sat on Rhaenyra Targaryen's black council and was one of her staunchest supporters. As Bartimos was a very wealthy lord, Rhaenyra hoped he would competently managed the treasury of the Crown and named him her master of coin after the fall of King's Landing. However, Bartimos grew quickly unpopular in the city after he restored ancient taxes and created new ones.[6] In 130 AC, some angry kingslanders cut off Bartimos's genitals and beheaded him during the riots that broke out in the capital.[12] Bartimos was succeeded by his son, Clement Celtigar.[13]
After the ascension of King Aegon III Targaryen, Lord Clement rode to King's Landing from Duskendale with Ser Corwyn Corbray and Lady Staunton.[13]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
The old Lord of Claw Isle, Ardrian Celtigar, declares for Stannis Baratheon at the start of the War of the Five Kings.[14] He is captured at the Battle of the Blackwater and bends the knee to King Joffrey I Baratheon.[15]
A Storm of Swords
Lord Ardrian stays in King's Landing in fear of reprisals from Stannis. He is present at the wedding of King Joffrey I to Lady Margaery Tyrell, and later testifies against Tyrion Lannister at his trial for regicide.[16]
