A holdfast in the hills[1] is found in the hills near Winterfell.
Layout
The holdfast is a small fortification with a gate and an ironwood stump in the center of its square.[1]

A Game of Thrones
Captured in the north after deserting the Night's Watch, Gared is taken outside the small holdfast and bound hand and foot to its wall. Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North, rides to the holdfast from Winterfell to administer the king's justice. After speaking with the condemned man, Lord Stark beheads him with Ice at the ironwood stump. Theon Greyjoy, Eddard's ward, then kicks Gared's head away. While riding back to Winterfell, Eddard's party finds six direwolf pups near a bridge across a river.[1]
