Longtable is the seat of House Merryweather in the Reach.[2] It sits along the Mander near its confluence with the Blueburn.[3] It is located some thirty leagues to the southwest of Bitterbridge.[1]
History
[edit]During the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Ormund Hightower led the siege of Longtable. Lady Caswell of Bitterbridge sent him the dragon egg of Prince Maelor Targaryen, who had just been murdered in the town, in hopes it might appease him. The siege of Longtable eventually ended when the widowed Lady Merryweather yielded. Lord Ormund took the castle's wealth and food before marching for Bitterbridge to sack the town and revenged Maelor's death.[1] Blacks from Longtable helped to fortify Tumbleton before the First Battle of Tumbleton.[1]
At the outbreak of Robert's Rebellion, King Aerys II Targaryen attained Lord Owen Merryweather, the Hand of the King, of Longtable, his titles, and lands for his failure to contain the rebellion. When the rebellion ended, Owen's grandson Orton persuaded King Robert I Baratheon to restore the lordship of Longtable to him,[4][5] but only some of the lands were returned and Robert emptied the Merryweather treasury in compensation.[5]
Orton's son Russell Merryweather was born at Longtable[2] in 293 AC or 294 AC.[6]
