A manse is a large house similar to a mansion or manor. Manses are frequently owned by the wealthy,[1] such as by merchants[2] and lords,[3] in cities,[4][5][6] though they can also be found in the countryside.[7] Manses can be fortified and found within walled estates.[8]

History

King Aenys I Targaryen resided at a manse atop Visenya's Hill during construction of the Red Keep.[9] Rego Draz owned a manse on the Street of Silk near the Dragonpit.[10]

Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon settled in a manse outside Pentos owned by a magister while waiting for Laena to give birth to Baela and Rhaena Targaryen.[11]

Lord Bartimos Celtigar was slain in his manse amid the riot of King's Landing during the Dance of the Dragons.[3] Prince Viserys Targaryen stayed at the manse of Bambarro Bazanne while a captive in Lys.[12] Marilda of Hull built a palatial manse at Hull which Mushroom dubbed the Mouse House.[13]

After the passing of Vogarro, his widow had to sell his manse inside the Black Wall of Volantis because freedmen are not allowed inside.[14][15]

While Ser Jorah Mormont was fighting as a sellsword on the Rhoyne, his wife, Lynesse Hightower, moved into Tregar Ormollen's manse in Lys.[16]

Ghiscari inter their honored dead in crypts below their manses.[17]

Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen are guests at the manse of Magister Illyrio Mopatis in Pentos.[8] The siblings then reside at Drogo's manse before Daenerys's wedding.[18]

Daenerys sees manses of woven grass as large as castles in Vaes Dothrak.[5]

A Clash of Kings

Tyrion Lannister settles his mistress, Shae, in the manse near the Iron Gate.[19] A manse owned by a goldsmith is burned down during the riots in King's Landing.[20]

Daenerys stays at the manse of Xaro Xhoan Daxos in Qarth, finding it vastly larger than Illyrio's manse.[21]

A Dance with Dragon

Lord Varys has Tyrion smuggled from King's Landing to Illyrio's home in Pentos.[22] Tyrion sees the ruins of what might have been a huge stone manse while traveling in the countryside between Pentos and Ghoyan Drohe.[7]
