The Crag is the seat of House Westerling in the westerlands. It sits along the coast[1] of the Sunset Sea, south of Banefort, northwest of Ashemark, and northeast of Fair Isle.[2]
Layout
[edit]According to Tyrion Lannister, the Crag is more of a ruin than a castle as the Westerlings no longer have the funds to maintain it.[1]
History
[edit]King Jaehaerys I Targaryen visited the castle in 55 AC.[3]
Recent Events
[edit]A Game of Thrones
[edit]Gawen Westerling, Lord of the Crag, is captured in the battle in the Whispering Wood.[4]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Gawen is held at Seagard by House Mallister.[5]
Robb Stark, King in the North, raids the westerlands during the War of the Five Kings. He marches on the Crag around the same time as the Battle of the Fords.[6] News is received at Riverrun that Robb has taken the castle.[7]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]The Crag was stormed, with Smalljon Umber and Black Walder Frey scaling the walls and Robb breaking through the main gate. Robb took an arrow to the arm, however, and was nursed back to health by Jeyne Westerling.[8] Jeyne comforted Robb when he learned of the alleged deaths of his younger brothers, Bran and Rickon, at Winterfell. To preserve her honor after they slept together, Robb married Jeyne shortly thereafter. As a consequence of that, the Westerlings have joined with House Stark, though the marriage has broken Robb's alliance with House Frey.[8]
In the aftermath of Robb's death at the Red Wedding,[9] Ser Rolph Spicer, the castellan of the Crag, is named Lord of Castamere by the Iron Throne.[10]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]After Ser Jaime Lannister resolves the siege of Riverrun, Lord Gawen and his family begin their journey back to the Crag.[11]
