Wedding of Robb Stark and Jeyne Westerling

The wedding of Robb Stark and Jeyne Westerling takes place in 299 AC during the War of the Five Kings. Robb Stark marries Jeyne Westerling, breaking his alliance with House Frey.[1]

Prelude

As part of the pact between House Stark and House Frey, Robb Stark agrees to marry a daughter of Lord Walder Frey once the fighting has ended.[2] Robb is proclaimed King in the North after the Battle of the Camps.[3]

During his campaign in the westerlands, Robb marches against the Crag, seat of House Westerling.[4] Robb is wounded during the storming of the Crag, taking an arrow in his arm.[1] The wound festers, so Jeyne Westerling takes Robb to her own bed and nurses the king until his fever passes.[1] After Lord Jon Umber brings Robb word of the capture of Winterfell by Theon Greyjoy and the supposed deaths of his brothers, Bran and Rickon Stark, Jeyne comforts Robb and they sleep together.[1]

Wedding

Since Jeyne was a maiden, Robb weds her the next day at the Crag to preserve her honor. Because Robb was supposed to marry a Frey, Black Walder Frey threatens to kill Jeyne to make Robb a widower able to remarry. Jeyne convinces Robb to be merciful, however, and the Freys angrily depart the Crag instead.[1]

Aftermath

The Freys who are with Lord Roose Bolton's host at Harrenhal are angered and feel dishonored when Lord Walder sends them word of Robb's marriage. Elmar Frey is sad to learn he will not be marrying a princess, Robb's sister Arya.[5] Freys at Riverrun intentionally trample over one of Robb's banners as they depart that castle.[1]

Jeyne and her family accompany Robb back to Riverrun, and Robb agrees to release Jeyne's father, Lord Gawen Westerling, from captivity at Seagard.[1] Robb and Jeyne try for a baby each day, and Jeyne's mother, Sybell Spicer, gives her a posset of herbs, milk, and ale each morning, telling the girl it will make her fertile.[6]

Tyrion Lannister is shocked after hearing of Robb's wedding, but his father, Lord Tywin Lannister, Hand of the King, is not particularly worried.[7] Tywin secretly corresponds with Lords Bolton and Frey.[8][9]

To restore the alliance between Houses Stark and Frey, Edmure Tully agrees to marry Roslin Frey.[10] Queen Jeyne remains behind at Riverrun when Robb marches to the Twins for his uncle's wedding.[11] When King Robb arrives at the Twins, Lord Walder has the young king publicly apologize to Walder's kinswomen.[12] Despite the expectation of guest right,[12] Robb and his followers are betrayed by Houses Frey and Bolton in the so-called Red Wedding, during which Robb and his mother, Catelyn Stark, are killed and Edmure is taken captive.[13][8]

In the aftermath of the Red Wedding, the Iron Throne pardons the Westerlings, rewards Ser Emmon Frey, one of Walder's sons, with Riverrun, names Roose as Warden of the North, and grants Castamere to Ser Rolph Spicer, Sybell's brother.[14]

Sybell forcefully takes away from Jeyne the crown which Robb had given her. After resolving the siege of Riverrun, Ser Jaime Lannister learns from Sybell that she had plotted with Tywin to prevent Jeyne from becoming pregnant. Jeyne tears her clothes in mourning for Robb before departing with her surviving family for the west.[15]

Kevan: He chose the girl's honor over his own. Once he had deflowered her, he had no other course.
Tyrion: It would have been kinder to leave her with a bastard in her belly.
Tywin: Jeyne Westerling is her mother's daughter, and Robb Stark is his father's son.[7]
