The wedding of Roose Bolton and Walda Frey takes place in 299 AC during the War of the Five Kings. Lord Roose Bolton marries Walda Frey at the Twins.[1]

Prelude

Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort, retreats to the Twins[2] after being defeated by Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock, at the battle on the Green Fork.[3] Roose, twice a widower,[4] agrees to marry a member of House Frey. Walder Frey, Lord of the Crossing, offers the bride's weight in silver for a dowry, so Roose chooses Walder's fifteen-year-old granddaughter Walda, who is known as "Fat Walda" because of her weight.[1]

Wedding

Roose and Walda marry at the Twins.[1] Walda is pleased that she is chosen instead of her slimmer cousin, Fair Walda.[5] The bride's father, Merrett Frey, hopes that his fortunes will rise through the Bolton-Frey alliance, but Lord Walder mocks his son over Walda's weight.[6]

Aftermath

After Tywin retreats to Harrenhal, Roose takes the ruby ford and the crossroads.[7] When Tywin marches west to confront Robb Stark, King in the North, Ser Edmure Tully sends word for Ser Helman Tallhart to depart the Twins and join Roose in a campaign against Harrenhal.[7]

Walda sends frequent letters from the Twins to Roose while he is encamped at Harrenhal.[8] Roose hopes to have a trueborn son with Walda,[9] as he fears his bastard son, Ramsay Snow, murdered his heir, Domeric Bolton.[4]

In the aftermath of the Red Wedding, the Iron Throne names Roose as Warden of the North and legitimizes Ramsay.[10] While at Barrowton, Roose informs the captive Theon Greyjoy that he has become fond of Walda, though he expects that Ramsay will kill any sons she births.[4] At Winterfell, Theon notices that Walda is pregnant.[11]

Quotes

I pray for you morn, noon, and night, my sweet lord, and count the days until you share my bed again. Return to me soon, and I will give you many trueborn sons to take the place of your dear Domeric and rule the Dreadfort after you.[8]

—Walda Frey writing to Roose Bolton

Roose: I wed the Lady Walda Frey whilst I was at the Twins.

Jaime: Fair Walda?

Roose: Fat Walda. My lord of Frey offered me my bride's weight in silver for a dowry, so I chose accordingly.[1]

Everyone thought my lord would choose Fair Walda. My lord grandfather offered Roose his bride's weight in silver as a dowry, though, so my lord of Bolton picked me. I weigh six stone more than Fair Walda, but that was the first time I was glad of it. I'm Lady Bolton now and my cousin's still a maid, and she'll be nineteen soon, poor thing.[5]

He picked her because she's fat. You think Bolton gave a mummer's fart that she was your whelp? Think he sat about thinking, 'Heh, Merrett Muttonhead, that's the very man I need for a good-father'? Your Walda's a sow in silk, that's why he picked her, and I'm not like to thank you for it. We'd have had the same alliance at half the price if your little porkling put down her spoon from time to time.[6]
