The dosh khaleen are a group of Dothraki crones who live in Vaes Dothrak.
Culture
[edit]Dosh khaleen are all former khaleesis, the wives of khals who have died. When a khal passes away, his khaleesi is expected to return to Vaes Dothrak and join the other widows.[1]
The dosh khaleen are the only permanent residents of Vaes Dothrak.[2] They enjoy great honor and status amongst the Dothraki and serve as seers foretelling the future and interpreting omens for their people. The crones are served by eunuchs and slaves.[3]
The prospective wives of khals must be presented to the dosh khaleen for acceptance.[4] Merchants give traditional gifts of salt, silver, and seed to the dosh khaleen when they come to Vaes Dothrak to trade.[5]
Recent Events

[edit]After her wedding outside Pentos, Daenerys Targaryen is taken to Vaes Dothrak to be introduced to the dosh khaleen. She eats a stallion heart before the crones, and they declare that the son of Daenerys and Khal Drogo will be the stallion who mounts the world, a great conqueror whose coming is long foretold in Dothraki prophecies.[3]
After Drogo dies, Daenerys refuses to join the dosh khaleen.[6]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Venturing south into the red waste with her small khalasar, Daenerys thinks that other Dothraki hosts would force her to join the dosh khaleen if she were to be captured by them.[7]
While in the House of the Undying in Qarth, Daenerys has a vision of a line of naked crones creeping from a great lake and bowing before her.[8]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]According to Ghael of Astapor, the Yunkai'i have sent riders to Vaes Dothrak to bring a khalasar upon Daenerys at Meereen.[9]

The crones of the dosh khaleen came first, with their eunuchs and slaves. Some supported themselves with tall carved staffs as they struggled along on ancient, shaking legs, while others walked as proud as any horselord. Each of the old women had been a khaleesi once. When their lord husbands died and a new khal took his place at the front of his riders, with a new khaleesi mounted beside him, they were sent here, to reign over the vast Dothraki nation. Even the mightiest of khals bowed to the wisdom and authority of the dosh khaleen. Still, it gave Dany the shivers to think that one day she might be sent to join them, whether she willed it or no.[3]
