History
Merrett served with his mothers relative Lord Sumner Crakehall as a page and later a squire. Like many Crakehall descendants, he was known for his strength and robustness. During this time he knew Jaime Lannister although the two were not very close because of Merret's habits of bullying others, which was not successful with Jaime.[3]
The downfall in his life began with the expedition against the Kingswood Brotherhood. First he spread a pox throughout the camp. Later he was captured by Wenda the White Fawn (a female outlaw), and was branded with her mark, the fawn.[4] During his release, he was hit with a mace that left him insensible for a week. As a result, he suffered immense pain whenever he was hit in the head, and generally suffering extreme headaches for which he drank excessively to numb the pain. He was never knighted because of his injuries. Due to his injuries he is mocked as Merrett the Muttonhead by his father.[5]
Merrett married Mariya of House Darry around 282 AL with whom he got four children.[6] His daughters shamed their parents due their infidelities (Amerei, 'Gatehouse Amy' Frey) and gluttony (Walda Frey). When the Freys allied with Roose Bolton, Lord Walder offered Bolton the choice of a daughter or granddaughter and her weight in silver as dowry. Bolton choose 'Fat' Walda Frey, Merrett's daughter.[7][8][9]
Recent Events
A Storm of Swords
During the Red Wedding, Merrett was told to get Greatjon Umber too drunk to fight during Robb's murder. He failed, however passing out, and the Greatjon wounded two men, killed one, and took part of Ser Leslyn Haigh's ear off .[10]
After the Red Wedding the Brotherhood Without Banners kidnapped Petyr Frey. Merrett volunteered to deliver the ransom. He hoped to gain favour by Petyr who stood high in the line of succession for the lordship of the Twins. He found that the Brotherhood had hanged Petyr for his involvement in the Red Wedding. They took the ransom and prepared to hang Merrett as well. When Merrett protested his innocence to the Red Wedding the Brotherhood told him they had a witness. This turned out to be Catelyn Tully who was not dead after all. Catelyn recognized Merrett and had him hanged.[11]
Appearence
Merret was a big broad man. In his youth he had been almost as robust as Hosteen Frey the strongest son of Lord Walder Frey but in later years he has become "soft and fleshy."[12]
