Brandon Stark, typically called "Bran", is Eddard and Catelyn's second son. He is named after his uncle. Bran enjoyed climbing and exploring Winterfell until he was crippled. Like his siblings, he is dutiful and tough-minded. He is usually accompanied by a direwolf named Summer, with whom he shares a strong warg connection.

[edit] Crippled

On a climbing expedition, he passed a window through which he could see the queen and her brother making love. He was shocked after being spotted, and lost his grip, almost falling before being caught by the Kingslayer. Despite feeling guilt over the necessity, Jaime pushed him from the window to kill him and keep secret the incestuous love affair, but Bran survived and entered a coma. During that coma, Bran had visions of a three-eyed crow that told him it could teach him to fly. With the crow's guidance, Bran awoke and immediately named his direwolf "Summer". Bran was crippled from the fall and unable to walk, but the crow told him that he is "the winged wolf" bound in chains.

[edit] Heir of Robb

After Robb became King in the North, Bran, as Robb's heir, became the Prince of Winterfell and ruled the castle in his brother's absence. He befriended Meera and Jojen Reed, children of his father's most trusted friend Howland Reed. While sleeping, Bran frequently entered Summer's mind, though he thought he was simply dreaming, and began to become more bestial. Jojen recognized Bran's ability as skinchanging and instructed him on how to use it properly. After learning of Bran's visions, Jojen claimed that if Bran went north beyond the Wall, he could find the three-eyed crow. When Theon Greyjoy betrayed the Starks and captured Winterfell, Bran hid in the crypts. To avoid that the escape of Bran and Rickon would be known and that they would become a rally point for resistance again him, Theon had 2 children of similar age killed and skinned and proclaimed them to be Bran and Rickon.

[edit] To the Wall

Theon was betrayed by Ramsay Bolton who had Winterfell burned and taken the surviving woman and children to the Dreathford. Ramsay had not acted out of loyalty to the Starks, but had conferred with his father to to betray the Starks and had even suggested to Theon to have two dead children take the role of the bodies of Bran and Rickon. He now has his men search for the children. This means that Rickon and Bran have to travel in secret. The brothers and their companies split. Rickon and Osha travelled into the direction of White Harbour. Bran, the Reeds, and Hodor went north to seek the crow. They traveled beyond the Wall and met Coldhands, an enigmatic figure of uncertain allegiance.
