The hall of the Mormonts[1] is the seat of House Mormont on Bear Island in the north.

Layout

[edit]

The seat of House Mormont is a wood-walled castle with a smoky keep.[2] The hall is built of huge logs and is surrounded by an earthen palisade.[1]

On the Mormonts' gate there is a carving of a woman in a bearskin with a babe suckling at her breast in one arm and a battleaxe in the other.[3]

History

[edit]

Lynesse Hightower wed Jorah Mormont, Lord of Bear Island, during the tourney at Lannisport in the aftermath of Greyjoy's Rebellion. Lynesse, who was used to life in wealthy Oldtown, disliked living at Bear Island. Jorah hired a new cook and a harper for his young wife, but the poor lord was unable to keep her in a life of luxury. Jorah eventually sold poachers into slavery, which caused him to flee with Lynesse into exile to escape the punishment of Lord Eddard Stark.[4][1]

Quotes

[edit]

My home was a great disappointment to Lynesse. It was too cold, too damp, too far away, my castle no more than a wooden longhall. We had no masques, no mummer shows, no balls or fairs. Seasons might pass without a singer ever coming to play for us, and there's not a goldsmith on the island. Even meals became a trial. My cook knew little beyond his roasts and stews, and Lynesse soon lost her taste for fish and venison.[1]

Dacey: There's a carving on our gate. A woman in a bearskin, with a child in one arm suckling at her breast. In the other hand she holds a battleaxe. She's no proper lady, that one, but I always loved her.
Maege: My nephew Jorah brought home a proper lady once. He won her in a tourney. How she hated that carving.[3]
