Tanda Stokeworth is the Lady of Stokeworth and the head of House Stokeworth.[1]
Appearance and Character
Tanda is an old woman[5] with a brittle voice.[6] She is not considered a particularly clever[7] or attractive woman.[8]
Cersei Lannister finds Lady Stokeworth to be tedious and hysterical,[9] and the queen dislikes Tanda's tearful embraces.[10]
Tanda has rich foods served at her meals, such as lamprey pie, roast sucking pig, fatted calf, wild boar, and cream stews, to impress her guests.[11][12][13]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Lord Petyr Baelish tells Lord Eddard Stark about his frequent meals with Lady Tanda and his distaste for her daughter, Lollys.[11][12]
After King Robert I Baratheon's death, Petyr tells Eddard that there is small love lost between Lord Renly Baratheon and the Lannisters, naming Tanda in this context as a possible supporter for a coup.[14]
A Clash of Kings
Lady Tanda is one of the remaining courtiers in King's Landing after the beginning of hostilities with the north. She attends the tourney for King Joffrey I's thirteenth name day with her two daughters, Falyse and Lollys, and she cheers Prince Tommen Baratheon on as he rides against a child-sized leather warrior stuffed with straw.[15]
Tanda starts hounding Tyrion Lannister the minute he arrives at the Red Keep, trying to coax the acting Hand of the King during lavish meals to marry Lollys. Tyrion repeatedly tries to dodge her invitations.[16][13] Lord Varys informs Tyrion about a small supper held by Lady Stokeworth and hands him the guest list for inspection.[17]
As supplies grow short in King's Landing during the War of the Five Kings, the lands of Tanda and Gyles provide half of the food still arriving as they lie close to the city and are still untouched by war.[13]
Tanda and Lollys are part of the procession to see Princess Myrcella Baratheon off to Dorne. She is saved by Ser Horas Redwyne during the riots in King's Landing, but her daughter is not as lucky and left behind. Lady Tanda is half-crazed about her fate when those who escaped reach the Red Keep, and she begs the king's men to locate her daughter. It turns out that Lollys has survived, but became a victim of a gang rape behind a tanner's shop in which fifty men participated.[18]
Tyrion and Varys discuss options for bringing Shae to the Red Keep without Queen Regent Cersei Lannister becoming aware of it. Varys arranges for one of Lollys's maids to be dismissed for stealing jewels, opening a position for Shae.[9]
Tanda attends the installation of Ser Balon Swann and Ser Osmund Kettleblack as new members of the Kingsguard in the royal sept.[7]
When Lord Rosby tries to smuggle Prince Tommen out of King's Landing on Cersei's orders, Tyrion has Gyles intercepted. Tanda worries she would not be allowed to return to Stokeworth, so she bribes Cersei with a pig, a rare sight in the starving city. As they dine on the pig, Tyrion tells Cersei he would rather have Tanda stay at the Red Keep and suggests that, if she wants to feel safe, she should bring her own garrison to King's Landing.[19] Falyse brings a small number of soldiers from Stokeworth to King's Landing the day before the Battle of the Blackwater.[20]
Lady Stokeworth stays in the Red Keep with her two daughters during the battle, and they are invited by Cersei to seek refuge with her in the Queen's Ballroom. Sansa Stark observes Falyse coaxing a reluctant Lollys onto the drawbridge leading to Maegor's Holdfast. Tanda kindly rejects Sansa's offer of assistance, excusing Lollys's behavior by pointing out that she has not been feeling well; Sansa knows of the rumors that Lollys is pregnant.[20] After a meal at the ballroom, Tanda and her daughters, with others, ask for leave to go to the sept, which is granted by Cersei.[6]
During the presentation of heroes and captives in the throne room after the battle, Sansa notices that Tanda and her daughters look pretty in their matching gowns of turquoise silk and vair.[21]
A Storm of Swords
Upon Shae's advice, Tanda hires Symon Silver Tongue to sing to Lollys to calm her when the baby starts kicking. When Shae asks Tyrion Lannister whether she could dress in her fine gowns and attend the upcoming wedding of King Joffrey I Baratheon and Lady Margaery Tyrell, Tyrion objects and says that Tanda might wonder where her daughter's bedmaid found so many jewels. Shae argues she would find a covered spot and Tanda would not see her among the thousand guests.[22]
Lady Tanda offers Lollys as a wife for Tyrion to Lord Tywin Lannister, but Tywin wants Tyrion to marry Sansa Stark to assure Lannister influence in the north. When Tyrion objects to marrying Sansa, Tywin mentions Tanda's offer. Tyrion replies that he would rather cut his penis off than marry Lollys.[23]
Shae informs Tyrion that Tanda slips Lollys dreamwine. Shae again raises the idea of attending the royal wedding, but Tyrion explains that Cersei would be more suspicious of the backstory given to Tanda and Lollys about Shae.[24]
Lady Stokeworth gives Joffrey a pair of supple riding boots as a wedding gift,[25] and she leaves the throne room while Joffrey chokes to death at his wedding feast.[26] Tyrion is accused of murder by Cersei.[27]
Visiting Tyrion in his imprisonment, Ser Bronn of the Blackwater tells Tyrion that he is expected at Castle Stokeworth for dinner, revealing that he has been offered to marry Lollys. Tyrion, suspecting a plot by Cersei to get Bronn out of the way, points out that Lollys is pregnant from another man and that Falyse is Tanda's heir. Bronn is not bothered by the baby, however, and makes the ominous suggestion that Falyse might die before her mother.[28]
A Feast for Crows
Tanda remains at Stokeworth with her younger daughter when Lollys becomes too pregnant to travel, so Falyse attends the wake of Lord Tywin Lannister in King's Landing instead. Tanda would like the child to be named after Tywin, but an offended Cersei refuses.[29]
The Stokeworths do not attend the wedding of King Tommen I and Queen Margaery Tyrell, for which Cersei is grateful.[10]
Tanda sends a raven to Grand Maester Pycelle informing Lollys has delivered a strong, healthy son named Tyrion. Lady Tanda insists that the choice was not hers but rather that of Ser Bronn, Lollys's new husband.[10]
Tanda's saddle girth bursts while riding, and she shatters her hip after being thrown from her horse. A stable boy is chastised, as he should have seen that the strap was worn. Maester Frenken does what he can, but Cersei is skeptical of Tanda recovering. The queen assures Falyse that she will pray for Tanda, however, telling her that Tanda is the sister she never had. Cersei manipulates Falyse and her husband, Ser Balman Byrch, to plot against Bronn.[30]
Balman attempts to kill Bronn at Stokeworth, but is slain in their duel. Calling himself Lord Stokeworth, Bronn expels Falyse from the castle and gives her clothes to Lollys. To keep her plotting against Bronn a secret, Cersei has Falyse given to Qyburn for his experiments.[31]
Cersei receives word from Stokeworth has Tanda died from a chill in her chest brought on by her injury.[4]
Quotes by Tanda
You have a good heart, my lady. Not every maid would weep so for a man who set her aside and wed her to a dwarf.[26]
—Tanda to Sansa Stark
The gods are cruel to take him so young and handsome, at his own wedding feast.[26]

Quotes about Tanda
I won't detain you long, I'm on my way to dine with Lady Tanda. Lamprey pie and roast suckling pig. She has some thought to wed me to her younger daughter, so her table is always astonishing. If truth be told, I'd sooner marry the pig, but don't tell her. I do love lamprey pie.[11]
Your lackwit sister gets herself raped by half of King's Landing, and Tanda thinks to honor the bastard with my lord father's name? I think not.[29]
Pray all you like, she will still be dead before the moon turns. Women as old as Tanda Stokeworth did not survive a broken hip.[30]
—thoughts of Cersei Lannister
Tanda dead and Gyles dying. It is well that we have Moon Boy, or the court would be entirely bereft of fools.[4]

Family
Tanda is the aunt of Lord Gyles Rosby's second wife and is a third cousin herself to Gyles.[30]
