That night at Stout's empty hall, Roose and Ramsay have an argument. With Theon the only other person in attendance. Ramsay complains about not having access to Barrow Hall (the seat of Lady Dustin), nor its kitchens. Roose points out that he is himself a guest at Barrow Hall, not its owner. He is not the one who takes decisions there, Lady Dustin is. And Lady Dustin cannot abide the presence of Ramsay. Roose decides to have the planned marriage take place in [[Winterfell]]. Also deciding, that their group and their wedding guests will march from Barrowton to Winterfell in three days. After making his decisions known, Roose leaves Stout's hall for Barrow Hall. He takes Theon with him, despite the protests of Ramsay. Roose takes Theon to Lady Dustin herself. {{Ref|aDwD|32}} She expected to meet a boy, and seems surprised that Theon looks like an old man. Barbrey explains to Theon that is expected to give away the bride at the wedding. Pointing that Theon is the closest thing to living kin that "Arya" has. Her father and mother being dead, all her brothers also dead, and her uncles lost, dead, or captive. Theon points that jon Snow is a closer relation than himself, a brother. Barbrey dismisses the idea. Replying that Jon is a half-brother to "Arya", [[Bastardy|bastard-born]], and bound to the [[Wall]]. While Theon was the ward of Eddard Stark. Theon is the only one who can assertain the various lords that "Arya" is genuine, not an imposter. Theon gets the message, that he is to serve as a cloak for their deception.

Barbrey did not follow Roose Bolton in his march to Winterfell. She arrives at a later point with baggage train, bringing with her Theon and "Arya". She observed that Theon was not eating and pointed it out. He did not bother to explain that his broken teeth made chewing an agony. She converses with him anyway. Observing that [[Wyman Manderly]] would have them believe that his pork pie is the best any of them have tasted. She also takes note of the apparent happiness of Manderly. She describes Mandely as [[Frey Pies/Theories|almost dancing, while serving pieces of pie with his own hands]].  She believes the man is trying to drown his fears, as  she considers Wyman "craven to the bone". She turns her attention (and that of Theon from Mandely to Roose Bolton himself. Pointing how closely Roose observes Manderly. Theon points that Barbrey herself could serve as an obstacle to Roose's plans. Lady Dustin admits that she could indeed be an inconvenience, if she makes that choice. She knows it, and Roose knows it. That is why Roose tries to maintain her favor. She is about to say more when three [[maesters]] ([[Maester Henly|Henly]], [[Medrick]], [[Rhodry]]) enter the Great Hall, and she quickly changes the subject. {{Ref|aDwD|37}} She converses a bit concerning her distrust of maesters and the agendas of the ones at the [[Citadel]] in [[Oldtown]]. Theon is finishing his meal in the Great Hall, listening to "Abel the Bard" ([[Mance Rayder]]) singing. Dustin enters sweeps into the Hall, and has two of her men bring Theon to her. She and her men have been searching for an entrance way into the Stark family crypt. They have already fruitlessly explored undercrofts, cellars, and dungeons. She wants Theon to lead to the Crypt. Pointing that all her favorite Starks are dead. Their small group find the entrance hidden by rubble and snow: great chunks of shattered masonry, burned beams, and broken gargoyles. Her men spend about an hour shoveling through the snow and shifting ruble. Her serjreant used an axe to pull open a frozen door. But the entrance was finally open for their Lady. {{Ref|aDwD|41}}

During their descent to the crypts, Dustin complains about "Arya" weeping. Roose is displeased, as the northmen still love the Starks. The sound of her weeping might turn them against the Boltons. Even the Hornwood men serving Ramsay probably find this a painful reminder of [[Donella Manderly]] and her fate. The Freys may not care, and Dustin herself has no love for the Starks. But those tears and wails hurt their cause. {{Ref|aDwD|41}} When Theon does lead her to the level of the modern Stark graves, Barbrey speculates concerning the lower levels and their current condition. While observing the statues of former Kings, Dustin enquires on their names. But then insists on specifically finding the tomb of Eddard Stark. She notes that a longsword is missing from one of the tombs. Dustin during the ascent from the crypts. Just after exiting the crypts, she warns Theon to not repeat her words to anyone. Theon gets the message that he either holds his tongue, or loses said tongue to Lady Dustin. She notes that Roose trained Theon well. {{Ref|aDwD|41}}
Snow continues falling on Winterfell, day and night. The long-expected enemy, Stannis, has yet to arrive. During a conversation mentioning Stannis, Lady Dustin offers her own take on the subject. She believes that Stannis is lost in the snowstorm, leagues away from Winterfell. Likely dead or dying. If the snowstorm continues, Stannis and his entire army will be buried beneath the snows. Theon silently agrees, but fears that Winterfell and everyone in it will share the same fate. {{Ref|aDwD|46}}
The following day, [[Hosteen Frey]] and Wyman Manderly have an intense argument. With several of their men ready to join them if the two came to blows. Barbrey Dustin and Roger Ryswell use quiet words to calm everyone down. Roose himself stays silent. Theon recognizes uneasiness and a hint of fear in the eyes of Lord Bolton. {{Ref|aDwD|46}}
Following the murder of [[Yellow Dick]], Roose asks "Abel" to sing at the Great Hall. Providing entertainment to the gathered crowd. "Abel" initially chooses moody songs, and Lady Dustin asks for something more cheerful. The bard replies by singing first "[[The Queen Took Off Her Sandal, the King Took Off His Crown]]", then "[[The Bear and the Maiden Fair]]". The Freys join the singing, and a few northmen slam their fists on the table to the chorus. {{Ref|aDwD|46}}
Theon takes a long walk outside during the snowstorm, then returns to his chambers. He is still stripping off his wet clothes, when summoned to the Great Keep. Roose Bolton, Barbrey Dustin, Roger Ryswell, and [[Aenys Frey]] are all expecting him in the solar. Reports of his recent wandering have reached them, making Theon a suspect for a recent series of murders in Winterfell. Lady Dustin asks Theon to take off his gloves, and examines his missing fingers. Aenys instists that Theon can still handle using a sword or dagger. Dustin laughs at the Frey and calls him a fool. She claims that Theon hardly has enough strength to handle a spoon. Not enough to use a dagger, and certainly not enough to wrestle with Yellow Dick. {{Ref|aDwD|46}} Theon privately wonders whether Dustin has told any of the three men about the crypts and their missing swords. {{Ref|aDwD|46}}
Aenys suggests Wyman Manderly and his knights as suspects. Dustin replies that "night work is not knight's work". She then turns the conversation to the [[Red Wedding]]. If Wyman hates the Freys, is because the man lost kin at their Wedding. But the [[House Umber|Umbers]], [[House Flint|Flints]], [[House Cerwyn|Cerwyns]], [[House Tallhart|Tallharts]], and [[House Slate|Slates]] all had men serving with Robb Stark, and all lost them at the Wedding. Therefore all have reasons to hate the Freys. Roger helpfully points out that the Ryswells and Dustins of Barrowton also lost men there. With a "feral smile" Dustin makes clear that she too bears a grudge against the Freys and announces:

Barbrey Dustin, née Ryswell, is the Lady of Barrowton as the widow of Willam Dustin, Lord of Barrowton. She was born into House Ryswell as the younger daughter of Rodrik Ryswell, Lord of the Rills.[1]

Appearance and Character

Barbrey is tall, unbent, and handsome.[7] She has wrinkles[7] around her mouth and dark eyes,[8] and her hair is equal parts brown and grey.[7] Lady Dustin wears her hair tied behind her head in a widow's knot.[7]

While intelligent,[9] Barbrey has grown into a bitter woman over the years.[7] Her smile can appear ugly[9] and feral.[10] Lady Dustin is distrustful of maesters and refers to them as "grey rats".[8] She was fond of her late nephew, Domeric Bolton, and despises Ramsay Snow, whom she blames for Domeric's death.[7] Barbrey also bears a grudge against Eddard Stark.[7][9]

Lady Dustin dresses all in black without gold or jewelry.[7] One of her gowns has a high stiff collar and sleeves lined with vair, and she has a sable cloak.[9] Barbrey's personal banner flying over the keep of Barrow Hall quarters the spiked crown and crossed long axes of House Dustin with the golden horse head of her father, Lord Rodrik Ryswell.[7] Beron is one of her serjeants.[9]

History

Barbrey is the surviving daughter of Rodrik Ryswell, Lord of the Rills, and is the sister of Roger, Rickard, and Roose Ryswell. Their sister was Bethany, the late second wife of Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort.[7]

Brandon Stark, the eldest son of Rickard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, often rode the Rills while being fostered at Barrowton with old Lord Dustin. Infatuated with the heir of Winterfell, young Barbrey had an affair with Brandon, who took her maidenhead. Lord Rodrik hoped to wed his daughter to a Stark, but Lord Rickard betrothed his heir to Catelyn Tully of Riverrun. Barbrey claims Brandon did not want to wed Catelyn[9] and that the betrothal was the idea of Walys, Rickard's maester at Winterfell.[8] Rodrik then hoped to wed Barbrey to Brandon's younger brother, Eddard Stark, but that was not to be. Barbrey instead wed Willam Dustin, the young Lord of Barrowton.[9]

The abduction of Lyanna Stark by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen led to the executions of Brandon and Lord Rickard Stark by King Aerys II Targaryen in King's Landing. Now Lord of Winterfell, Eddard returned to the north to call his banners for Robert's Rebellion. Not yet half a year into marriage, Willam rode off to war against Barbrey's objections. Barbrey gifted him with a fine red steed, the pride of her father's herd, and Willam swore he would return to her mounted on the horse.[9] However, Lord Dustin was slain in the combat at the tower of joy,[11] and Ned built cairns for the fallen.[12] After the war ended, Lord Stark returned Willam's steed to Barbrey. She bears a grudge against Eddard, who brought the bones of his sister, Lyanna, to Winterfell for burial in its crypt, but not the bones of her husband, Lord Dustin, to Barrowton.[9]

In accordance with the Widow's Law, Barbrey remained at Barrowton after her husband's passing and rules the town in her own name. She was fond of her sister Bethany's son, Domeric Bolton, who served at Barrowton for four years as her page.[13][7] Since Domeric's death in 297 AC, Barbrey has nursed suspicions about Ramsay Snow's involvement.[7]

During the War of the Five Kings, Lady Barbrey sent a minimal number of soldiers from Barrowton to join the army of Robb Stark, who was proclaimed King in the North but later killed in the Red Wedding.[9]

Barbey is one of the signatories of the letters that Ramsay Bolton sends announcing that Moat Cailin has been retaken from the ironborn.[14] She hosts the Boltons at Barrowton, where the wedding of Ramsay to "Arya Stark" (actually Jeyne Poole) is to occur. She cannot abide the presence of Ramsay and his Bastard's Boys[10] and forbids them from Barrow Hall, as she suspects Ramsay had a hand in the death of her nephew, Domeric Bolton. She gives grey colts to Ramsay's squires, Big Walder and Little Walder Frey.[7]

When Roose Bolton, the new Warden of the North, learns that King Stannis Baratheon has left the Wall, he decides to move Ramsay's wedding from Barrowton to Winterfell.[7] Barbrey insists on taking custody of "Arya" until the wedding occurs. Theon Greyjoy, who travels in Lady Dustin's retinue to Winterfell, sits beside her at the wedding feast. Although Barbrey is astute and has good political savvy, she fails to see through the behavior of Wyman Manderly, Lord of White Harbor, during the feast. She is offended by Wyman's apparent capitulation despite his son, Ser Wendel Manderly, dying at the Red Wedding, and she dismisses Lord Manderly to Theon as craven to the bone—just after Wyman serves his pies.[8] Theon suspects that Barbrey is aware the bride is an impostor.[9]

Among the snowmen that squires build along the battlements of Winterfell, one is a snow lady resembling Barbrey. Lady Dustin has Theon lead her into the crypts of Winterfell, where she explains much of her history and story to him. Barbrey resents that Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, returned the horse of her husband, Willam Dustin, Lord of Barrowton, after Robert's Rebellion, but not Willam's bones. As vengeance, Barbrey tells Theon that if Eddard's bones, which were heading north before Moat Cailin fell to the ironborn, are discovered north of the Neck, she will ensure they are never put to rest in the crypts, and she plans to feed them to her dogs.[9] Barrowton is staunch for House Bolton largely because of this grievance.[7] Before leaving the crypts, Barbrey and Theon discover that swords are missing from the tombs, including that of Brandon Stark, her lover from her youth.[9]

As tensions arise in snow-bound Winterfell, Barbrey and her brother, Ser Roger Ryswell, calm knights from House Manderly when Ser Hosteen Frey insults Lord Wyman. When Barbrey requests a more cheerful song than "The Winter Maid" during a meal, Abel sings "The Queen Took Off Her Sandal, the King Took Off His Crown" and "The Bear and the Maiden Fair". While she appears to be loyal to House Bolton, Barbrey bears a grudge against House Frey due to the fact that several of her own men were killed at the Red Wedding. She points this out to Ser Aenys Frey when several suspicious deaths occur in Winterfell.[10] She is absent when the Manderlys and Freys clash after the death of Little Walder and Theon escapes the castle.[15]
