Tyrion fights during the Battle of the Blackwater. Ser Mandon Moore attempts to kill him during the fighting, but Tyrion is saved by his squire, Podrick Payne.

Tyrion leads a sortie from a sally point against Stannis's forces, who have landed on the tourney grounds and are attacking the King's Gate. Tyrion orders Podrick Payne to turn back, but the young squire refuses to leave Tyrion's side. With Ser Mandon Moore of the Kingsguard at his side, Tyrion leads the wedge in shattering the attackers. Along the riverfront, Tyrion also sees the men of Ser Balon Swann or Ser Lancel Lannister attacking Stannis's men as they disembark from burning ships.

Tyrion next rides for the River Gate, feeling he has what Jaime calls battle fever as he cuts down men along the way. Balon points out to Tyrion that Stannis's men are trying to cross to the northern shore of the Blackwater Rush by leaping from deck to deck across wrecked ships. Balon and Mandon join Tyrion in attacking them as they cross the makeshift bridge.

The ship Tyrion is on starts to sink, and amid the chaos he is confused to see a great battle seemingly involving Stannis's men on the south shore of the Blackwater, the opposite shore of the Red Keep. When Tyrion is about to slip into the water, Mandon reaches from the next ship and tells Tyrion to take his hand, his left hand. As Tyrion reaches for his hand, he instinctively reels backward as Mandon's sword slices part of his face. Tyrion struggles onto the deck and collapses. Mandon prepares to stab Tyrion through the throat, but suddenly lurches to the side and vanishes into the water. Podrick, who has saved Tyrion by pushing Mandon, advises his grievously-wounded master to rest.
