Singers or bards are musicians who perform songs about knights, maids, heroes, and history. They are known for singing stories that are fictional or distorted and dramatized versions of true events.
Culture
[edit]Singers accompany their singing with musical instruments, such as the harp,[1] lute,[2] or drums.[3] They will often travel from place to place, sometimes making extended at castles at the behest of their lords.[4] Although singers are often lowborn,[5][6] they may also come from noble backgrounds, such as Alesander Frey[7] and Aemon Costayne.[8]
Some singers sing as a passion or hobby rather than as a profession, such as Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.[9]
Despite their fictionalized versions of history, singers have also coined names for important historical events that became used by the maesters, including the Field of Fire[10] and the Dance of the Dragons.[11]
History
[edit]Queen Alysanne Targaryen raised Tom the Strummer to the position of court singer, an office that was held by many others in the decades that followed.[12]
When Sansa Stark was a little girl, an elderly singer came to Winterfell and stayed for half a year. He sang every song he knew several times, and Sansa cried when he left.[4]

[edit]Galyeon of Cuy, Bethany Fair-fingers, Aemon Costayne, Alaric of Eysen, Hamish the Harper, Collio Quaynis, and Orland of Oldtown are invited to Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell's wedding to compete for a golden lute.[8]
Symon Silver Tongue composes a song about Tyrion Lannister and his mistress Shae and attempts to blackmail him with it, in hopes of replacing one of the seven singers at Joffrey's wedding.[8]
Hamish the Harper and Collio Quaynis both perform "The Rains of Castamere" at the wedding, while Galyeon of Cuy sings a lengthy song he composed about the Battle of the Blackwater.[13]
