Captain of the gate is a position charged with the command of a castle's gate or of the city's gates.
The Knight of the Bloody Gate[1] does not fit into this position because the Bloody Gate is not actually a gate, but a series of battlements that guard entry to the Vale of Arryn.[2][3]
History
Established under the reign of Maegor I Targaryen, the captains of the gates of King's Landing are high-ranking officials in the City Watch of King's Landing.[4][5] The likes of Ser Luthor Largent, Ser Balon Byrch, and Ser Adrian Thorne were all captains of one of the seven City Gates before being promoted to Commander of the City Watch.[6][7][8]
During the regency of King Aegon III Targaryen, the captains of the Dragon Gate, the Gate of the Gods, the Iron Gate, the King's Gate, the Old Gate and the River Gate were all accused of involvement in the plot against House Rogare.[8]
Following the death of Manly Stokeworth, the captain of the Iron Gate, Janos Slynt, became the City Watch's new commander.[9]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
The captain of the River Gate, Ser Jacelyn Bywater, is promoted to commander of the City Watch after the dismissal of Lord Janos Slynt by the acting Hand of the King Tyrion Lannister.[10]
A Storm of Swords
When Ser Davos Seaworth arrives at the gate of Dragonstone after the Battle of the Blackwater, he asks for its captain Jate Blackberry, but the new guardsmen do not know the name and believe him to be dead.[11]
A Feast for Crows
The captain of Duskendale's gate tells Brienne of Tarth that her oaken shield bears the black bat of House Lothston, which are arms of ill repute, and then recommends his sister to Brienne, as she is a painter who can repaint her shield.[12]
The captain of the Dragon Gate, Humfrey Waters, is promoted to commander of the City Watch after the dismissal of Ser Osfryd Kettleblack.[13]
