The Great Masters are the ruling class of Meereen, one of the cities of Slaver's Bay. They belong to the great slaver families of the city, such as the House of Loraq or the House of Pahl.[1] The Great Masters reside in pyramids[2] and wear tokars.[3]

[edit]A Storm of Swords
[edit]During the campaign of Daenerys Targaryen in Slaver's Bay, the Great Maesters of Meereen harvest crops and burn fields as Daenerys's host travels north from Yunkai. To intimidate her, they nail a slave child up on every milepost along the coast road, with an arm pointing in the direction of Meereen; Daenerys counts 163 children along the way.[4]
Oznak zo Pahl is sent out to challenge Daenerys's champion when her host arrives before Meereen. Strong Belwas slays Oznak in single combat, shaming the Great Masters.[4] After conquering Meeren, Daenerys has the Great Masters and their women gathered in the plaza before the Great Pyramid. Daenerys has 163 of their leaders nailed to wooden posts, each with an arm pointed to the next.[5]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]Daenerys rules as Queen of Meereen. From their pyramids, the Great Masters complain that the dragon queen has brought beggars, thieves, and whores to their city.[2] Daenerys refuses to compensate the Great Masters after freeing their slaves,[2] and she orders that each pyramid send her a boy and a girl to serve as her pages and cupbearers.[6]
When Daenerys sends an envoy to the Tolosi, they demand that she restore the Great Masters to power.[7] Skahaz mo Kandaq informs the queen that all of the Meereenese ships participating in a blockade of the city are captained by Great Masters.[1]
The Great Masters occupy the red and orange benches when Daenerys reopens Daznak's Pit.[8]
Quotes
[edit]The Great Masters, what a ripe lot o' maggots.[4]
In the plaza before the Great Pyramid, the Meereenese huddled forlorn. The Great Masters had looked anything but great in the morning light. Stripped of their jewels and their fringed tokars, they were contemptible; a herd of old men with shriveled balls and spotted skin and young men with ridiculous hair.[5]
