The harbor beneath Dragonstone[1] is located in a fishing village near the castle of Dragonstone on the island of the same name.[2]
Layout
[edit]The fishing village huddles beneath the curtain walls of Dragonstone.[2] Tall arched windows in the gallery of the castle give a commanding view of the nearby village.[3]
The port contains taverns, inn, and whorehouses,[4] including a weathered little inn at the end of a stone pier. Standing before the inn is an eroded waist-high gargoyle.[5]
History
[edit]Members of House Targaryen sometimes slept with common women in the various villages below the Dragonmont.[4]
Many of the smallfolk of the fishing village attended the wedding of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen in 49 AC.[2] Alysanne and two Kingsguard welcomed the Wise Women when they arrived at the harbor.[6]
Queen Rhaena Targaryen forbade Princess Aerea Targaryen from mingling with the daughters of fisherfolk from the village.[7] Androw Farman chose not to explore the fishing village and its docks beneath the castle.[7]
Ser Arryk Cargyll came ashore at the fishing village and entered Dragonstone disguised as his twin, Ser Erryk, during his failed mission amid the Dance of the Dragons.[4] The merchant cog Nessaria limped into the harbor after being battered by a storm. Its crew told tales in taverns, inns, and brothels along the waterfront that they had seen two battling dragons (Sunfyre and the Grey Ghost).[1] Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen returned to Dragonstone's harbor on the Violande, unaware that her rival, King Aegon II Targaryen, had already taken the castle.[8]
Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone, banned prostitution on his isle.[5]
Recent Events
[edit]A Game of Thrones
[edit]Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone, returns to his isle after King Robert I Baratheon departs for Winterfell to name Lord Eddard Stark as Hand of the King.[9] War breaks out after Robert's death, and Lord Varys hears whispers that Stannis is building ships.[10]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Ser Davos Seaworth visits the fishing village beneath Dragonstone during the War of the Five Kings and finds the strand lined with ships. The Onion Knight meets with Salladhor Saan in the common room of the weathered little inn. Devan Seaworth then meets Davos at the docked Black Betha and informs his father that Stannis has requested his presence in the castle.[5]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]The harbor and the dockside streets are largely empty since so many of Stannis's ships were destroyed in the Battle of the Blackwater. When Davos passes through the village, many houses display a mark of mourning.[11]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Lord Paxter Redwyne leads a siege of Dragonstone, encamping his army beneath the castle's walls.[12]

Every dock teemed with sailors loading provisions, and every inn was packed with soldiers dicing or drinking or looking for a whore ... a vain search, since Stannis permitted none on his island. Ships lined the strand; war galleys and fishing vessels, stout carracks and fat-bottomed cogs. The best berths had been taken by the largest vessels: Stannis's flagship Fury rocking between Lord Steffon and Stag of the Sea, Lord Velaryon's silver-hulled Pride of Driftmark and her three sisters, Lord Celtigar's ornate Red Claw, the ponderous Swordfish with her long iron prow. Out to sea at anchor rode Salladhor Saan's great Valyrian amongst the striped hulls of two dozen smaller Lysene galleys.[5]

His walk up from the Bountiful Harvest to the gates of Dragonstone was long and lonely. The dockside streets where soldiers and sailors and smallfolk had thronged were empty and deserted. Where once he had stepped around squealing pigs and naked children, rats scurried. His legs felt like pudding beneath him, and thrice the coughing racked him so badly that he had to stop and rest. No one came to help him, nor even peered through a window to see what was the matter. The windows were shuttered, the doors barred, and more than half the houses displayed some mark of mourning. Thousands sailed up the Blackwater Rush, and hundreds came back, Davos reflected. My sons did not die alone. May the Mother have mercy on them all.[11]
