Lynesse Hightower is the youngest daughter of Lord Leyton Hightower of Oldtown.[3] She was the second wife of Ser Jorah Mormont and is now the chief concubine of Tregar Ormollen in Lys.
Appearance and Character
[edit]The beautiful Lynesse has golden hair, skin the color of cream, soft hands, and small breasts.[4] Jorah Mormont thinks Lynesse looks similar to Daenerys Targaryen.[3]
Lynesse prefers a luxurious lifestyle and enjoys fairs, musicians, mummers, fine food, and jewelry.[3] According to Jeor Mormont, Lynesse is a vain woman.[5] Jorah still loves and hates his second wife.[3]
History
[edit]During the tourney at Lannisport, Lynesse allowed her favor to be worn by Ser Jorah Mormont, Lord of Bear Island, who was twice her age and a widower after the death of his first wife. Jorah had recently been knighted for his bravery during Greyjoy's Rebellion. Jorah crowned Lynesse the queen of love and beauty after winning the tourney and asked for her hand in marriage, to which Lord Leyton Hightower consented. Lynesse and Jorah married shortly thereafter in Lannisport.[3]

Although they had married for love, the marriage did not remain happy for long. Having grown up in House Hightower in prosperous Oldtown, Lynesse was unprepared for life at poor Bear Island in the remote north, and she quickly became miserable.[3] They visited Winterfell for feasts, and during a stay which lasted a fortnight, a drunken Lynesse confessed her unhappiness to Lady Catelyn Stark, a fellow southron. Catelyn tried to reassure Lynesse, explaining she once felt similar but came to love parts of the north.[4]
Ser Jorah attempted to reproduce the luxurious lifestyle his wife was accustomed to, sending for a cook from Oldtown and a harper from Lannisport and building her a fine ship. Jorah lavished Lynesse with expensive gifts and voyages to Lannisport, Oldtown, and even Braavos, where he borrowed from moneylenders. Lynesse was unimpressed with Jorah's defeats in other tourneys, each of which meant the knightly lord had to ransom or replace his horse and jousting armor at great expense.[3]
The situation became worse when Lynesse and Jorah returned to Bear Island. Lord Mormont had driven himself into financial ruin, and Lynesse refused to sell her jewelry.[3] In desperation, Jorah attempted to raise money by selling some convicted poachers to a Tyroshi slaver.[3] Learning that one of his bannermen had engaged in the slave trade, Lord Eddard Stark declared Jorah's life forfeit.[3] Rather than face the Warden of the North, however, Jorah fled with Lynesse to Essos in 293 AC.[6]
Ser Jorah would have preferred to live in Braavos, but to make Lynesse happy he instead chose the warmer Lys,[7] where he sold his ship.[3] Jorah became a sellsword, but Lynesse outspent his earnings tenfold. Lynesse moved into the manse of Tregar Ormollen, a Lysene merchant prince, while Jorah was fighting Braavosi on the Rhoyne.[3] When Jorah finally returned to Lys, Tregar threatened to enslave the northman if he did not give up Lynesse. Jorah choose to abandon Lys for Volantis.[7]
Lynesse is now Tregar's chief concubine; even his wife goes in fear of her.[3]

Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, warns Jon Snow, mentioning the love his son Jorah had for Lynesse.[5]

[edit]While in Vaes Tolorro, Ser Jorah tells Daenerys Targaryen of his second wife, Lynesse, and his ill-fated marriage to her.[3]

[edit]Lady Maege Mormont and her heir, Dacey, speak of Lynesse to Catelyn Stark while they travel in the rain to the Twins.[4]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]When Ser Humfrey Hightower sails to Lys to hire sellsails to help fight off the ironborn attack on the Reach, it is a commonly-held hope that Lynesse will help him get the best possible fleet.[8] While talking with Samwell Tarly, the captain of the Huntress refers to Lynesse as Humfrey's "whore of a sister".[8]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]Jorah, having been exiled from Meereen by Daenerys, captures Tyrion Lannister in Selhorys.[9] In Volantis, Jorah tells Tyrion of Lynesse abandoning him years ago for Tregar Ormollen in Lys.[7]
